Cleverates does not work !?!

Does any one have a problem connecting to Cleverates ? I have a BT land line and when calling their 1p/min number 0844 721 2525, I get a BT message "The number you have dialled has not been recognized. Please check and try again"
I am also with a CPS provider Tesco Home Phone. Dont know if this has anything to do with my inability to connect to Cleverates.

I have just checked my BT recent call charges and have discovered that the Bt minimum call charge of 5p is applied to all calls to cleverates once the call is answered by the "price of call " message ,regardless of whether you get your call put through or not .I had tried 6 times to get a connection before I finally got through to my Sons moblie for what was a quick" meet me at" message, so not so cheap after all! I suppose the 5p will also apply to the alternative number referred to by the link in this thread.

If you call any dial through 0844/0845/0870/0871 cheap call access number you start paying for the call as soon as the dial through providers recorded annoncement starts. So if you dont get through, number is unobtainable, out of range, you hit answering machine. You still pay min call charge to your lanline provider.EG 5p BT.

I understand you have a better chance of getting through on Discount Dial no.

Does this also apply every time one gets a BT answer message regardless of leaving a message ,or not??

If you mean someone's personal answering machine or the BT 1571 version, yes.

"Welcome to BT answer 1571 ......." means the call has been connected so, if your call provider has a minimum call charge or a connection charge, hearing that means you've started paying.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

unless you dial 0844/0870/0845 etc.. using a provider like swiftnet on 0800 6191 999 who provide CPS [or 1xxx] service with no minimum charges & per second billing!

But what do they charge to call 0844/0845/0870 numbers in the first place. Their rates to dont look to attractive. See http://www.swiftnet.co.uk/telephone/telephone_rates.asp

Yes as soon as any answering machine starts, unless it is a BT recorded "announcement" which should then say you have "not been charged for this call".
This minimum charge has always been there, that is one of the reasons why I moved to cable, they used to charge 1.5p instead, but thensome clever sod said if BT can get away with it we will charge the same, and this month it has become 6p  on top of the call seconds. Unless you have full itemised billing the charge will not be obvious, just another moneyspinner.
