I was a lucky sod and managed to get a full new set of locks off ebay for £15 delivered, even including the shear security bolt for the ignition switch. So Ebay is worth a look.

If it's anything as easy as the locks on mine to change you should be able to DIY it. Try a Haynes manual for your car.

You may even find a specialist locksmith can make a key up based on your locks. It's highly unlikely they would be able to but you could try a Toyota dealer with the vin number of the car to ask if they can make a key up.

reminds me of being younger and poorer, much happier though!

It was cool because once we got the new ignition all sorted out you could still not start the car without pressing the demister button first, like a basic immobiliser!

I had a hidden switch fitted to my Triumph 1300 nearly 30 years ago. It actually prevented the car being stolen one night.:T

    thanks everyone, panic over!

had just took the plastic casing off the steering surround and feeling rather puzzled at the array of wires and cables (the gear stick as well as the bonnet opening is on the steering column too, plus all the usual lights & wipers stuff  ) when i got a phonecall from my 'better' half that he had found my key at his work....

...shame i was quite looking foward to bodging it :D .

anyway i must get another one cut this week, theyre not much are they?

one more thing- since ive got everyones attention, and saves me starting another thread ;) -

theres a button on the dash that says PWR-ECT. if you switch it to PWR a light comes up on the display by the speedo? ive got a british manual for the car, but its an import so the info doesnt fully correspond, and theres no mention of this button in there anyhow. i havent noticed any difference in drive, nothing 'appears' to happen when its switched, but im just curious, any ideas? :o

  • key will be cheap

It is actually to "improve" the shifts of the automatic transmission. I can tell a difference when I do this but it does use more gas and I don't like that. It is not really a sporty car so I have a sports car to drive if I want firmer shifts.

brill, thats been bugging me for ages! i assumed that whatever it was it used more diesel cos of the light- it comes up next to the turbo light which obviously indicates more consumption.... well that was my theory anyway! :rotfl:

well, no i couldnt tell any difference, but then again it is quite possibly the worst drive you could ever experience anyway- even worse than my old nova, and thats saying something... :rotfl:
