hi, :A self explanatory really! lost my car key, dont have a spare.

car is unlocked so i can get in it, how much will it cost to change the ignition? not too worried about the door locks really  , its an old banger, likely to be scrapped in the spring.

is it easy to do if i can get a scrap ignition?

also, hot wiring? :o

any advice at all greatly appreciated, thanks for reading!

  • what year

if its before 98 it probablyy doesnt have an immobiliser

i would imagine you could get a complete lock set off ebay for less than 50

a car without an immobiliser is easy to start if you know how, so you could just buy a stoplock and use a screwdriver to start it!

Lost keys may be covered by your insurance, worth a look if it is something strange like a Fiat with a red key system

    its 93, no immobiliser.

didnt think about insurance, ive only got very basic 3rd party though so i doubt it but worth checking the policy booklet- thankyou.

re starting it without a key, im sure it is easy if you know how :o unfortunately i dont  , if i just take the casing off around the ig, will the wires be behind there or do i need to rip the ig out first?

  • On the inside end of the ignition lock, there should be a small plastic cylinder, to which, lots of wires attached. Try to detach it from the ignition metal cylinder, then you should be able to start the car with a flat screw driver.

    Good luck

    yup exacly as he said

i had to do this when i bent my key, i just had to hold my key near when it was starting as it had an immobiliser!

any local garage will be able to make it startable without a key withing 20 mins

i have rigged ccars with broken igniton up in the past where you have to press a secret button to start it (this was another rear demister button from the scrap yard)

reminds me of being younger and poorer, much happier though!

It was cool because once we got the new ignition all sorted out you could still not start the car without pressing the demister button first, like a basic immobiliser!
