WARNING - TISCALI and those with closed accounts

In short keep any paperwork they send you plus your final bill for at least 6 months.

I was a Tiscali customer up until May this year. I unfortunately ended up one as they took over Homechoice.

Due to their poor customer service I managed after spending 2 hours on the phone to close my account.

However as they mucked me around over the phone I paid my last payment by cheque and sent it to them via recorded delivery with a complaint letter. They didn't reply to the letter until 2 months later in July. When they did reply they stated my account balance had been cleared.

About 2 weeks after that they sent a cheque for £17.99.

On 23rd November they took a direct debit out of my bank account for £1.33. I asked the bank to refund it which the bank did. (As this was done via online banking it was no hassle.)

Today I received a letter stating that I owe them £1.33. I have now sent them a reply by email and first class post that if they don't agree that my account is cleared then I will have no choice but to take them to arbitation.

They are terrible for this. They kept saying my account was still open and demanding payments despite me having switched to a new supplier the same day as calling them to cancel my account. You have proof that you owe them nothing just ignore any further contact they make.

As I don't want to be credit blacklisted or have debt collectors chasing me I have been through my paperwork. I discovered that I sent them a letter in June stating if they contacted me again asking for payment when I owed them nothing I will take them to court.

So now I have written and will post a "Letter Before Action" stating something similar and adding words to the affect that if they send debt collectors after me, ruin my credit file or reset up another direct debit mandate I will take them to court.
