Just make sure they try to wind the engine over with all the spark plugs removed. I once came accross an engine that had been diagnosed as seized. In actual fact it was one pot hydraulicing(sp) due to a badly failed head gasket. Can still do major damage tho'

    Not a bad online diagnosis then:A :A :A ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

They had a look in the engine and the bores (sp?) and cylinders were full of oil and I needed a new cylinder head gasket.
So all in all the good news is its looking like I don't need a new engine :j but bad news is we are still not sure why this happened.

    OH.
I'd not get your hopes up yet. The reason it locked up solid was because the engine "hydrauliced" due to the oil in the bores. Now here's the bad bit. This has a very strong tendency to bend con-rods and the crankshaft. Unfortunately, you can't always tell straight away and you may find yourself driving down the road then there's a bang as a conrod snaps and goes through the side of the engine block.
  • That sounds ominous. You think it would be worthwhile sticking into the BMW garage to get a look over?

I need to get the garage who has it at the moment to clarify whether they mean nothing at all and to let me know if they see any leaks. I got the impression when I spoke to them this morning that they didn't do much of a check.

There was definetly no warning lights on at all when the engine was running (usual ones when the key is insterted but they went away when it was turned).

Seriously tempted to take it to my BMW dealer now. I was looking at some engine prices from some google links and its from £1,800 to £2,800 for a second hand engine from random websites like:

    findanengine.co.uk and
    breakeryard.com

and I don't even know if they are reputiable.

Used but good engine £1000, cost to fit no more than £500.

Shop around specialist breakers for engine and local BMW indis for labour.

I would expect the engine to be OK after re reading your 1st post. Its likely to have stalled as a result of compression loss and water/oil being in the cylinders. The "seizure" being due to trying to compress this after it had had time to run in to the pots. That BMW unit is pretty strong, and the above is the best possible scenario, if the unit winds over smoothley and evenly with the plugs out it is likely you have got away with it. New head gasket and head checked for warping, possibly skimming, would be the cure.

I'd get a quote from an independant and BMW based on that assumption and then make your decision.

You probably know the likely % cost difference based on what you pay for servicing.

Only two posts, dragging up old threads, both rubbishing the same company.

So Bob, have you had a bad experience with them, or are you a rival?

There are dozens of posts on various forums about these people.

Their latest rip off was just last week!
They still have not refunded over £600 I paid in January!
    Rival...? No
    Bitter...? Yes
