When I cancelled my Orange contract and requested the PAC code the "customer services" told me that if you request the PAC code and then don't use it your contract is not cancelled and you will still keep on getting billed. Don't know how true this is but in the end I did not bother porting my number and opted for a new number as at least I can get rid of some people that had my old number

It's entirely true, similar to my earlier post about cancelling v porting

given the hazy working practices of the number porting teams I wouldn't trust them to remember to port it 3 weeks down the line. Personally I'd always aim about 7 days from the end of the 30 days, if it's quicker you don't lose that much, if it takes longer than 7 days then you still only pay for what you use and no more.
Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. What I meant was obtain the PAC code and then sit on it for three weeks before arranging a port 5 working days later.

This is what I normally do and it saves wasting the remaining line rental.

  • Thanks to everyone, i've got a result. Orange have just phoned me to tell me that he agreed with everything I said in my letter. He is going to refund me the £16.16.

I have learnt 1 very good lesson in porting my number.

Ok sorry to ask the same question but still unclear having re read whole thread.
My 12 month contract with Orange ends on the 28th Jan. I will be requesting my PAC code. Is it worth asking for it now or waiting until the end of the month? If I get it now and then dont use it until 28th will I still get charged until mid Feb when the 30 days are up? Or should I ask for it now and not use it until say 20 days are up?
Also if I use CPW or dialaphone but still connect to Orange do I need the PAC code?

The contract will end 30 days from when the notice is given. It doesn't automatically cease at 12 months.

The PAC is a separate issue, to keep the number. Ask for it now or soon, and apply to use it a week before the end of the notice period.

It would appear that Orange have been generous, but not at fault [I think], as the OP didn't appreciate that applying the PAC earlier would stop the contract but not waive the notice period.

Additionally, anyone that gives notice that includes a part billing period should be careful to understand how many minutes are left - using all the minutes in less time will not get any line rental credit.

If you are finishing an Orange contract and moving to a new Orange deal via CPW or Dialaphone then a PAC isn't needed(or more correctly serves no purpose) as you can't move an Orange number to another Orange contract(or at least not the way you intend to). If you just want to tale out a new Orange contract and get a new number then just give 30 days notice on your current contract

The networks seem to resist moving your old number on to a new contract on same network.

Some people suggest porting it on to a payg SIM from another network for a few days, then to the new contract. I haven't bothered, and just asked Orange to change the old one to payg.

Maybe it depends how many incoming calls you get, and how long it would take to give friends the new number.
