i am a first year student at uni and already i feel like packing it in is this normal? i am finding it alot more boring that i thought i would ...i have a few assignments i have to hand in and cant be bothered to do them .....i have to referance them which i dont have a clue how to do and when i approac people i am told "its ok it isnt that hard " now this might be the case i dont know cause i cant do it...i have to write a reflective piece about a visit we did to a centre now i thought it was utter rubbish and not even slightly interesting ...ok i managed to write that bit ...but how do i referance it ...
i have 3 and a half more years to go and i dont know if i can do it
was wondering if i am alone
No think it's pretty typical! You need to find a group of like minded people and meet up to chew the fat. Referencing is ok once you have it explained. Are there no study groups at your uni? We have regular classes to explain referencing etc. If not ask one of the lecturers, ours went over it in class when they realised it was a problem. They want you to pass after all.
Good luck and don't give up!!0 -
thanks surfsister ...a few of us have mentioned it in class and to each other but dont feel like we are getting any further forward ....not to worry though i have the links in here and will be saving them and showing them to class mates ...0

just to let you all know ... i gave up after the end of second year ... i didnt enjoy the course from day one and dreaded going to uni every day ... the course wasnt hard it was easy enough work that had to be done ... i got ok results ... but come the feb of 2010 the very thought of going back in the september filled me with dread ( we finished up at uni in the December for second year then went onto a placement till the end of May) i just couldnt do it i had a huge knot in my stomach at the mere thought of returning to that course ...
i learned alot though ... i now know that just because you have letters after your name it dont meant your smart clever or even nice .... i learned that the education system in the U.K is quite frankly appalling ... i learned that i really love learning but that it has to be done correctly .... i learned that i can put up with rubbish much longer than i thought possible ( two years that was good going) i learned that my education from now on will be much more fun than the two years i spent on that hellish course
the thing that has fascinated me though was finding out that i was not alone ... plenty in my course were/are the same ... it's a 4 year honours course but the huge majority of my class are leaving after 3rd year they cant stand the place /course either and they have informed me they will not be staying on for 4th year ... which whilst fascinating it is also rather sad0 -

true - but exactly the same applies to people who don't have letters after their nameeveryone's different and you can get great people and hideous people everywhere!

don't confuse a bad course with an entire education system - it would be sad if you took that away from this situation

i'm really glad that you came to right decision for you. that's the most important outcome.
in situations like this it can be helpful to write a letter detailing your concerns after you leave (not a ranting 'everything was rubbish' letter but some constructive comments on where you felt that support was lacking).
if that many students are dropping out, they'll be looking into what they can do to improve the situation. some people will drop out from every course, but the levels you're talking about show that that something on the course is really wrong (or they're not managing expectations of what is on the course at all - which can happen!).
good luck with whatever you do next.:happyhear0 -

yep i totally agree there are many people without letters after their names like that ... its more that i was of the opinion before i went to uni that people with letters after their name were like that ... my issue and certainly no reflection on anyone else ... letters after their name or not ....
sadly many students are dropping out ... the year i was in was the first of a new updated course ... that previouslu had many people had been dropping out for years, so they overhauled the course altogether .... ( i have a few friends that had done the course previously) but when we started we found out that it was essentially the same ... not many changes were made ... so i was going to write a letter and no not a damming you are all rubbish one ... i am quite good at letter writting ( and have people that can help me if i struggle also) but since they hadnt even made a real effort to make the changes there really isnt any need as they know already what the issues are
i agree also it isnt the entire education system that is shoddy ... i did other courses at the same uni that were fantastic ... but i am also aware that i have studied now at quite a few higher education establishments and tbh ... some of what the deem as an education is really kinda scary0
