Alternative To Obscured Glass In Bathroom Window

I'm just having new window fitted, but that obscured glass reminds me of my parents house in the 70's

I'm tempted to have clear glass with a blind although it is overlooked.

What are the alternatives, what do you have?

Has anyone used that film you can get that looks like frosted or stained glass?

We have friends that have one way mirror glass in their bathroom window - from the inside it looks totally normal but from outside you simply can't see through it even at night with the light on inside (and we have at their invitation tested it!). They did have a bit of a sense of humour tho as they put the toilet right by the window - it takes a bit of nerve to get down to business with an apparently clear window right next to you!

If your having new windows fitted i would discuss it with the installer. There are lots of different obscured glasses to choose from. Another idea that i saw on one house we looked at buying a few years ago was a glass that looked like a mirror from outside but from inside it appeared a normal window...all the front windows of the house were the same as it was close to the road so not much privacy. Not sure whether it was a film or actually sealed into the glass unit but it may of interest to you.

    ...bit of cross-posting...like Dave says!

  • I had new windows - had a choice of about 15 different types of glass, and there were other types available at an extra cost.
  • I put frosting film on my bathroom windows.
    Cheap and effective.

Probably a rather expensive alternative, but how about stained glass?

My bathroom had virtually transparent winows and I use some film but it simply turned mouldy.

As there was trouble with condensation as well, I bought new double-glazed units - argon-filled - that virtually cured the condensation problem. The units have obscure glass.

There were one or two styles of glass that did remind me of the obscure glass of the sixties and seventies, but I ignored those and chose something more modern-looking.

Don't know about the cost, but you would have to be a very bad shot !

Brume produce the widest range of window films - I have used them, they are not the cheapest but imho have the best range.

I have seen people build a wooden frame for an old salvaged stained glass window and used it as secondary glazing to provide privacy.

Alternatively, an obscure blind might be an option, you can pull it down when required, but open it up when you don't need the privacy. I have this in my ensuite, but the room is not overlooked.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

If you want something that looks like frosted glass, why don't you have frosted glass?

If you ask, they'll do it. Our window guy has always tried to steer us away saying we won't like it because you really can't see anything out of it at all. In developments I've gone with the 70s stuff (LOL!) because of what he's said but in our house we have just put in frosted - it's not in the brochure but it costs no more than the other stuff. I guess it takes a moment's getting used to, but if you like it; you like it - I'm really pleased as it's certainly more modern, and very private, if nothing else!
