I have a problem with IE. I usually use firefox with no problems, however if I try to use IE all I get is a blank sceen. All of the options are non-responsive and I have uninstalled and reinstalled with no joy. Does anyone know what can be causing this?

make sure theres no background infection

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
    • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

    try resetting it to default

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

Method 1: Use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature from Internet Explorer 7

loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); Follow these steps to use the Reset Internet Explorer Settings feature from Internet Explorer 7:
    1. In Internet Explorer 7, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
    2. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
    3. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
    4. When Internet Explorer 7 finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK two times.
    5. Close Internet Explorer 7. The changes take effect the next time that you open Internet Explorer 7.

Thanks for your assistance, but I have already got malwarebytes installed and I have Tune-up utilities installed also. I am now running an E-set scan and this does not appear to make any difference. I have tried clicking on the tabs and they do not work. It will not close down either, I have to use Task manager. It is very odd.

Tuneup could easily have killed it if youve used its 'registry cleaner'
Open it up and try to reincorporate the registries (If theyre still 'backed up')

Cheers. I have tried the above and used the tune up registry cleaner rescue centre. Still no joy. When I go into IE7 and type in an e-mail address and address bar pop up with a red x appears to say that the e-mail address is currently unavailable. I am at a loss.

Id recommend stopping the tuneup memory optimiser
and the defrag service (If its automatic)
Uninstall pcpitstop (though ~ put the registries back if theyre save first)

Its also looking lie your using IObits 'smart ram'? Which means its conflicting with the tuneup one (And theyre both useless anyways)

'zinio reader' ive never heard of. I assume its safe?

You have a load of 'acer' applications running. Theyre probably not needed (And again, probably conflicting)

Have got rid of IObits software. Do you not recommend Tune up? Seemed to be a good program to me. Zinio reader is PDF reader to read on-line magazines and is safe. I never use the Acer applications, maybe I should delete them. Does the above give any idea why IE does not work? Seems odd that firefox works yet IE does not.

Id recommend AGAINST using tuneup as theres nothing it does thats worth using. DEFRAGGLER is a better defrag
Most of the options (Well all probably), can be done within the operating system anyway
The registry cleaner CAN and DOES make the odd mess of things (Deleting what it shouldnt)
The ram part is absolutely useless

So personally, id get rid of it (Though the 'file shredder' function is useful), or at least stop it from running automatically (Especially the '1 click' mode)

Did you manage to reset IE7 as per Browntoas advice?

I honestly cant see what would effect IE7 in the hijack list (Though id be temped to stop all the c*ap from starting up such as the ACER programs etc in case theyve auto updated and made a mess of things)

Aside from that id uninstall it
    download to your dekstop ready
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Browsers/Internet-Explorer-7.shtml

    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
run the first 2 scans (Backing up the registry when it asks)

reboot and keep pressing F8 to get it into SAFE MODE

    Try installing in safe mode
