Yes, such devices can be obtained by importing them from other countries.

I believe it is not legal to sell or use them in the UK.
  • sorry, seen this today and can't resist
I believe they are illegal in the UK, but available on ebay

Just remember that if you use such a device, it's effects permeate a lot further than the walls of the house. If people complain they can't use their phone in an area, the mobile networks investigate and find out your friend is using a jammer, she will find herself in court.

I suppose it is too simplistic to suggest that he changes his phone number, or turns it off when he doesn't want to receive their calls?

A few folk have suggested that it would be illegal to use such a 'jamming' device and they are quite right. It most certainly is illegal.

You need a licence to transmit on most frequencies and mobile operators pay huge amounts of money for their licences. All a 'jamming' device is is a transmitter that transmits noise to drown out the mobile network signals.

They do exist and are normally used where gangs of youths congregate, especially after someone complains that a 'Mosquito' is cruel on the little darlings. The idea is that if they cant get a signal to 'txt there m8' sat next to them they'll move on to where they can get a signal.
