You generally have to pay to legally download commercial music. You can buy music on a track per track basis, or you can buy albums. For ease of use, the iTunes Store is probably your best bet, though for music, there are places such as play.com which can be cheaper.0

each track is 79p on itunes, and albums are between £5-12. videos are £1.29 each i think
You can add tracks from CDs too though.
edited to add: i wouldn't buy an ipod for a 9 year old. they're very delicate and a target for theft!0 -

I'm SO happy to hear someone else doesn't know what they're buying
. My 11 year old wants a MP4 player and I was considering a Nano.
Does anyone know if he will be able to download, say, Youtube videos? Can he download CDs he's already got? Do you HAVE to buy from itunes?
Maybe someone can just come to the shops with me and stop me wasting all my money
. I'm hoping for some sort of gaming laptop too and I'm just clueless
