Bypassing AOL??

OK, does anyone know the answer to this?
MY ISP is AOL, so I have a capped monthly download limit. However, I have noticed that if I turn my laptop on, do not 'touch' AOL but click the Microsoft Explorer button I am online!
Am I bypassing AOL and therefore the capped download limit, or will I be hit by an extended bill if I over use BBC iPlayer?
