I have a 1979 chey pickup with a 454, and the starter broke the nose cone, so I went and bought another one, and the second time I started it it broke the new one, so I got another one with the warranty, and it lasted alittle over a month, in which yesterday it was fine, and I went to start it today and it just spun, got under and looked and sure enough the nose cone was busted comletely off this time, could that be faulty starters? there is really no wrong way to put a starter on, and the flywheel is in good shape! Im lost here it could get very expensive buying new starters every month

Don't know about your car, but if you're buying aftermarket parts, you might want to try looking for OEM if still made, or better quality aftermarket parts - or even get a specialist company to make one up in good quality. These would be more expensive but would hopefully save you money in the long run.0

Ive been getting the starters at NAPA the one it calls for, at $55 a pop
Probably have better luck going to a wrecking yard, done that before with an altenator, went through 3 of them at the parts store, then got one from a wrecking yard and never had a problem with it again
Maybe this is the same type of deal!0 -
It could be that you've got a different gearbox on to what you think you have. Certainly Chevy pickups didn't come out of the factory with a 454 so you could have any gearbox/engine combo.0

Do you have title of the starter? Or did you have to drive 200 miles for that...?0

have you never thought that you might be fitting the wrong starter motor? maybe it has too many or too little teeth? maybe the wrong flywheel/ ring gear fitted?
i cant believe you have fitted 3 starter motors without investigating this fault further? crazy!...work permit granted!0 -
wow every one is a critic!
ring gear is fine, its the right starter, I think they are just making them cheaper, now this one is barely touching the ring gear, SAME PART NUMBER
shimmed it any and evry possible way, Id have to say this one wont work
and no need to reply as soon as I can figure out how to delete posts I will get off your forum, crazy huh?:rotfl:
trying to find possible reasons it could be happening, Ive never come across this problem before!
