Is the london underground really free over xmas to new year?

I met someone last week (that i dont know) who told me that the underground was "free last year over the new year period".
Not knowing this person, i have no idea if he was talking rubbish or not.
Does anyone know if it really was free last year, if it's normally free, and whether it will be free this coming xmas/new year or is the guy having a laugh!
If it is true, does anyone know the dates included and whether it's just underground or other public transport?

No, it is not free between Christmas and New Year. NYE is a different matter.

Thanks. The info on that link is consistent with what the man said "free last year over the new year period". Just wanted to confirm it was true and clarify the details.

Not sure what you mean. NYE is between xmas and new year! There appears to be 15mins free on new years eve and 4.5hrs on new years day. May be you've only read the title and not my full post and other peoples answers.

Or maybe you are just being extremely pedantic.

If you read my post carefully you will see it was a bit of an interrogation to find the specific detail. It appears that the main timing of the free period is to cover NYD when people are travelling after the celebrations following NYE. NYE in the main is NOT free, except for the last 15 minutes. Your post does not say any of this. I would infer from your post that NYE only may be free, but would not have a clue of the hours it was between, so could assume all evening (at least).
It is not a question of being pedantic. With offers you often need to comply with SPECIFIC terms and conditions and in this case specific times. These specifics are usually to be taken literally without interpretation, emotion, etc.
I do not want to get into a childish point scoring session, i just wanted clarification of the detail because telling the guard/policeman etc that they are just being pedantic for not thinking like you may not help!
If you are going to tell the world about offers on here, you need be careful that you don't mislead people.
