I just can't bring myself to spend money just now - think I've gone too far to be honest! My pay might be cut substantially in November 09, and I've moved into miser mode just in case! Will be spending £100 max on Xmas presents, though I could afford to spend a lot more - wonder how many people are thinking along the same lines.

I went in that mode a year ago and worked out exactly what I could afford to pay for everything. I allowed £50 for each of my 4 daughters for xmas and I`ve spent £108 total. Youngest gets DLA and she`ll get the £60 bonus in the new year so she`ll have new ds games then.

My company is a bit precarious at the moment so I`ll be going into benefit mode soon in preparation.

They can reduce VAT and the BOE base rate as much as they like but I won`t be going out spending. I have stopped being as miserly with the heating though.

Well, the queues in the newly opened Poundland stretched around several aisles.

Apart from that nobody seemed to be buying anything.

Went to a PCWorld on Saturday. This time last year, you didn't have a hope of getting the attention of a salesperson if you wanted to buy something, big queues at the tills.

Flash forward to the present day - I was approached about every 3-4 minutes by a sales person as I had a quick browse around. Hardly anyone there buying, was able to pick out what I came to buy and walk straight to a till. While I was there, I did see a nice mouse that they were asking 45 quid for ... went home and was able to get it on Amazon for 31 quid delivered. Probably one of the reasons why they didn't have so many customers.

They are part of the Dixons group (DSG) who are having a few troubles right now. Even if the group stays afloat, I can't see half or even two thirds of their sales staff keeping their jobs given the apparent lack of customers. Maybe things will pick up closer to Xmas but the New Year looks very grim for retailers.

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.
  • Our town was pretty empty for a Saturday and a month-end as well, and the Post Office too - which really surprised me. I thought perhaps that they were all waiting for next weekend when the VAT decrease will be in force.

Went into Woolworths and thought how much I would miss it if it closes down - sadly there was nothing I wanted to buy though, at least with a 2.5% discount from Monday.

We are not all doom and gloomers and scrooges at xmas, i know this is MSE but good god, and some people say us Jocks are tight:rotfl:

Interesting point regarding your online purchase !!!!!!? . In my line, specialist consumer electronics I feel very sorry for the traditional retailer. So many devote their time and expertise in demonstrating equipment to then lose the sale to the online guys.

For some types of shops it will be "use it or lose it".

Some of us have to be scrooge at Christmas as we just don't have the money to spend to be anything else without then not being able to afford to put food on the table, heat in our homes or have running water.

£750 would feed my family for nearly 4 months, maybe more and comments like yours do not make me feel any better about myself or my situation and in fact, makes me feel even more a downright failure.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Sue. I don`t know you but from what I have read here you are far from a failure. I know life has been easier in the past but I think what you do for your kids in difficult circumstances is terrific. Would be proud to have you as a friend.
