Hey,
Im a student living in leeds. We only have a electricity supply. no gas.
The heater in the living room is rubbish, had it on max and didnt even get warm so ive been using a halogen portable heater 600w. it does the job.
The land lady has just brought round another heater to go on the wall, brand new. but its 3kw.
Will this be really expensive to run?

Do the arithmetic. 3000/600=5. So the 3kw heater will use 5 times the amount of electricity while it is actually outputting heat. Maybe it has a thermostat of some kind that you can set so the heater goes off when the room is hot enough, then on again as the temperature drops again.0

And if the tariff you are on is say; 10p per kwh (it may be a bit more than this)
3kw will cost 30p per hour
600w will cost 6p per hour
Assuming as "savetilibleed" says, both are on continuous without a thermostat cutting it out.
As is said many many times in this forum, the kw ratings are real 100% output, so 3kw will be outputting 5 times the heat of the 600w, so you would not expect to feel the same room temperatures from both of them.
Or, if the 600w does keep the room at an ok temperature for you, then setting the 3kw stat should switch it on and off to use the same amount of electricity.0 -
Electric heaters cost a fortune to run, ur best off getting a few more of the halogen ones cos when your sat in front of them they give off radiant heat and light which feels pleasant these will make ur rooms feel cosy too.If you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0

We bought a traditional (but cheap) fan heater, one of the low profile ones, to dry out some flooring that got wet from a plumbing leak. It was fine apart from being noisy and it vibrated. Dried the floor out fine. Then after three weeks one element packed up. So back to the shop today for a replacement but as I wasn't too happy with the quality I had a refund instead. Elsewhere I got an upright fan heater for about the same next to nothing (a Pifco) same power, 2kW, with a 1kw lower setting like the defunct one. But its puny for the same power consumption. Doesn't project heat anywhere near as well or far as the other one. Not sure I can take it back as it's not really faulty, just not much good. S'pose could argue its lack of fitness for purpose as a heater.0

Of course u can send it back, if its not a suitable replacement for the other you can take it back and say its not suitable for your purposes.
Take it back, get your money back and look elsewhere.
