Wow, thanks for all the replies! It's a 3 door we have, so don't really want to be struggling getting in and out of the back. We have been thinking about getting rid of the car for a while and this has really given us the push we need.

I think we'll go to a few dealers and get an idea of part-ex value. If we can get a Focus for, say, £2k + the 206 then I'll be happy. Does that sound feasible?
Sounds fair, as long as you are happy with the deal. Ford are good at upping the spec to sell a car, so if they offer you a poor price make sure you get leather, a/c, alloys etc on the new one to compensate...

  • Cheaper to buy condoms next time...

Most 206's seem to have more hits that the Beatles anyway. Try and go for a newer Focus tdci with the Peugeot 1.6 diesel in it as its better than the old heap of a 1.8 that Ford put in the early Focus's/Focuses/Focus/Foci.
  • Thanks, I've had a quote for the work now (£1k) and got an idea from a garage of part-ex value in its current state and with the work done. It looks like the best bet will be to get the work done then sell private in the spring. That way we should get about £1,500 for the car after the costs of bodywork, as opposed to £1,200 part-ex in current condition.

Harveybobbles: Is it just the 1.8 tddi's that should be avoided or the tdci's too? Not seen many 1.6 tdci's around as I think they tend to be newer, hence out of our price bracket.
  • i would say repairing cosmetic damage is a waste of time

Hmmm.....don't bet the bank on getting £2.5k in 6 months time. If this was share trading I would be selling these short at that price

If you can get £1.2k just now grab it.

Best thing to do is muddle along until you know where this economy is going.
