Baby on way - how to upgrade?

Hi,
I'd be grateful for any advice anyone could give on this...
We just found out that we're expecting our first baby so will need a bigger car. We currently have a 53 plate 1.1 Peugeot 206 which we've had from new and think that a '04 Ford Focus 5 door (probably TDCi) would be a good car to upgrade to. Having looked at prices I reckon we shold be able to get the Focus for about £4k. Problem is, our 206 is a bit battered with dents on every corner, so there's no chance of getting the £2,500-£3,000 for it I've seen them going for on Auto Trader/eBay.
We can afford to buy the Focus outright, but would need to sell the 206 pretty quickly. Alternatively, would part-ex be a good option? I can't see a private buyer buying it off us due to the damage.
What would you do in our situation? How much do you think we'd get for the 206 part-ex? Would we be better off getting the damage to the 206 fixed first, and if so how much would that kind of bodywork cost?
Apologies for all the questions - I know it's hard to comment without seeing the damage, but there's serious dents in at least two panels.
Thanks,
James

In this market I would be very wary of spending too much money tarting a car up. If they are dings with no broken paint someone might be interested purely becuase it's a bit cheaper. But perhaps worth getting a quote to repair anyway.
Personally I would not like like to be sitting with a car to sell privately just now so would probably be looking to trade in. If it's as bad as you suggest then the garage will send it straight to auction.
titheRev might have a better clue on prices but even in pristine state I doubt you would get anywhere near the £2.5k (if that is what you reckon its worth). So probably be prepared to accept <£1.5k for it, but expect a good chunk off the repalcement.
I think I would be tempted to struggle on with your car until the economy look like improving (although I can quite understand that a 1.1 Pug will be a pain with a new baby).
PS There was a thread on here yesterday with someone suggesting 20%-40% lower than book value but the jury seem sto be out on how bad it really is out there.0 -
It's hard to judge prices without seeing the damage, but i'd suggest Hintza's not far off at around 1.5k if it's got two hefty dings. You can get a glasses guide via Autotrader which will give you a better idea of price specific to your model and condition, but dont expect that price to be offered at trade-in.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. the problem with a popular car like a 206 is that its a buyers market, you wouldnt buy one with dents unless it was really cheap
I would stick with hte 206 as youve not said its unreliable or anything, put the baby in the front and the adult in the back0 -

We did absolutely fine with a 206 and a baby
. We were away most weekends with all the associated gubbins; that might as well mean moving house when you're going away with all the baby gea!.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Also depends whether it's a 3 or 5 door version as to how easy you may cope:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. With a child seat strapped in the front it's not so easy to recline the front seat:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Wow, thanks for all the replies! It's a 3 door we have, so don't really want to be struggling getting in and out of the back. We have been thinking about getting rid of the car for a while and this has really given us the push we need.
I think we'll go to a few dealers and get an idea of part-ex value. If we can get a Focus for, say, £2k + the 206 then I'll be happy. Does that sound feasible?0 -
