Sorry but I have found their Faster payments to be fine. I bank with a number of other banks as well and to be honest I don't think any one is worse than the rest. Service generally in this country is poor because employers seem to have the attitude that the least (less?) they pay is best. I was always taught 'Pay peanuts, get monkeys'. I think we just need to complain more and don't give up until satisfied. :T

The problem is that it is unreasonably expensive to employ people in the UK. There's the issue of National Insurance, maternity/paternity leave to be paid, the over bearing laws around firing people, working time directive, etc.

A lot of businesses, unfortunately, cannot afford to pay their employees any more and still produce an acceptable profit margin.

My parents have banked with Lloyds for over 40 years and never had a problem. I guess it just depends on the branch, the advisor, the customer etc. All banks can have their hell and heaven moments.

I was with FD (who are renowned for the best service in the UK) and I had the worst service ever from a bank and switched to Lloyds who I've had no problems with whatsoever, I guess banking is a game of chance.

Fair enough, it certainly is down to opinion in many cases. I certainly have never had, despite good credit, loans and credit cards offered (bombarded) at me, anywhere other than Lloyds.

As for faster payments, what a farce they have made of that. They worked on internet banking for about 2 days? You now have to ring up and request a payment is sent by faster payments, even when they say it will be, it very often is not.

For one of the big4/5, they are far behind the rest in terms of service.

I agree. I've never even once had success sending a LTSB Faster Payment online. I have to phone up to do it. I even got scolded by the !!!!!face advisor when I asked her to put a Faster Payment through for me. "it's a bit late at night, I doubt it will go out now," she said.

You can send FPs online any time of the day or night with HSBC. I am hoping it will be the same with Barclays.

The faster payment thing is annoying with Lloyds, but at the end of the day banks do not have to offer Faster Payments and FPs for free as well. Every transfer I make from Lloyds is done via FP and takes about 3 secs from leaving my account and always works - yes I have to ring up every time, but atleast it gets there and works.

FP is another service the banks are giving on their own, no law, no incentive, no need to offer - but obviously they feel now they should. Would you still be moaning if you had to pay for a FP?

At the end of day like BarclaysManager stated, it costs a lot to employ people and sadly the average UK citizen doesn't give the best service to a customer. Unfortunately, you deal with it, switch or do something about it.
I would say in terms of normal banking, most banks are the same, but if you want something particular then find the bank that gives it, otherwise tough.

Since the day of the FP launch I have been able to send FP's with HSBC and NatWest at anytime of day without problem. My main bank (co-operative) however don't currently have the system up and running on my sort code. I don't mind too much though because they are tiny in comparison to Lloyds, HSBC etc and so obviously it will take longer to implement. Even so, they don't claim to be able to do it and then fail, as Lloyds do.

I agree that in this country (although we're not alone) it does cost an awful lot to employ somebody. I don't for one second believe that Lloyds TSB would have trouble turning a profit if they paid that little be more for better staff, though. :)
  • The problem is that they hound out good experienced staff and bring in cheaper trolley dollies.

I've tried 3 times today to do a FP with Lloyds and not one time has it worked.

Apparently they change the limit that can be transferred several times a day, but don't tell the staff. It can be anywhere between £500 and £10k!!! So the £3k that I'm trying to transfer isn't going anywhere.

They've suggested I see if the receiving bank will take the money by debit card, or go and withdraw the cash and pay it into the other bank in cash.

I thought this was the 21st century

Update - my only option if I want the money in my FD account within a week is to withdraw it in cash and pay it in over the counter at the other bank.

    Superb.

tinkerbell84 - what reasons are they giving you for it not working.I've still got an account with FD which I fund to clear off the OD and my FP transfers from Lloyds to FD work everytime. I ring them up, ask to do a FP transfer and then 2 secs later it's in my account. I do one every few days, once a week and it always goes through without any problems.
