Are Java updates important?

  • I tend to visit the sire to update as sometimes the update does not point to the latest release. Doing it this, albeit long winded, means I always have the latest.

Update 10 onwards is supposed to make updating easier and should end the uninstalling of older versions.

Some versions don't install properly over older ones. I think 1.6.0 was like that over 1.5.~, and this one seems the same.

I did that on their site last night, but then checking again I got some odd message about needing an older version. So I deleted 4 old ones; then another odd message. In the end I deleted then re-installed the current version, which is now fine.

As well as getting back some space from uninstalling, there are also redundant folders of the downloaded packages at 50 MB each. I can find them on an XP machine, but am still finding my way round this Vista one
  • Just bumping this one to ask for confirmation that I should uninstall the SE runtime environment 6 update as mentioned in my post #11. Have already uninstalled the others.

Would appreciate it if someone could run their eye over my previous concerns in the thread.

Yes, Charlton King, I would have thought it would be fine to uninstall all java material except the latest version.

If there's problems, you can always Uninstall all versions and start again with versions that work for you.

You won't break anything iby uninstalling java.

No; I have not updated mine either (been prompted each day for the last two months at least).

Ditto Flash - never a necessity, unless youtube etc. demand the latest update:)

Obviously you're quite Ok with your PC being infected then?
