Bump.
Could I just ask for some extra feedback on my post #11?0 -
As post 12 - uninstall all but update 10, as this is the latest version0

If you are not running version 10 then follow these instructions
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version6 and save it to your desktop.
- Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 10...allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Select your Platform: "Windows".
- Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
- Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- Click Continue and the page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe
- Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.

Sorry but I thought I'd already made it clear that I'd installed update 10 as per my post#6.
I assume I now simply click on the other items (as detailed in post#11) and select 'uninstall'... no?0 -
Yes, uninstall all previous versions in the control panel add/remove programs as RS indicates. My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.0

I am just getting round to updating Java. My new laptop is only up to Java 6 update 5!!
Could somebody please explain why it is better to go to the site and download update 10, rather than open Java and ask it to look for and install updates? Although I've had my new laptop for a few mths now, it seems that when it was installed, someone checked the NEVER DOWNLOAD UPDATES box, so this is why it is so out of date.
I'm lucky nothing nasty has made it's way onto the laptop as I regularly check with my free security thanks to you guys:beer:

I don't why this would be in your case but, many programs check for updates every time you switch on.Although I've had my new laptop for a few mths now, it seems that when it was installed, someone checked the NEVER DOWNLOAD UPDATES box, so this is why it is so out of date.
This is O.K. for security software, but if a program only updates every few months it MAY be beneficial to turn off automatic updates to give slightly reduced boot times, remember there could be several programs checking for updates at each boot.
A good way to keep an eye on available updates is to run Secunia scanner once a month.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Thanks for your reply, but do you know why it is considered better to download update 10 from the Sun site, save it to the desktop, close all apps etc rather than just go to Java and ask it to check for and install updates, which just seems easier to me?
