Does anyone know of a good Broadband provider?

Hi,

Sorry for being a bit stupid about this but I have looked on ispreview.co.uk and I am now even more confused about what to do, so I thought I would ask for some first hand advise on here. Basically I am looking for a better broadband deal for my parents. They are currently with NTL and I think that the connection speed for the money is not very good, nor is the service whenever they have had problems. They currently pay £17.99 a month for a 512k connection. Ideally I would like to get them a 1 mbs connection speed. Their main use of the internet is for surfing on websites, sending some emails and they also do a bit of online gaming (well my sister does) and also download a few video clips and radio clips, but they probably use it for about 25-30 hours a week on average.

I looked at Toucan because they seemed cheap, but have now read some not very good reviews about them. Can anyone recommend a decent broadband provider for around £15-18 a month with a connection speed of 1mb? Also they would require a modem (pref. for free and free connection - otherwise they might just continue with rip-off NTL becuase they are too lazy to change their provider), but are fine with 12 month contracts and everything.

Please let me know of any suggestions for a good provider to fit their bill and I will be very grateful. I WILL get them to leave NTL!!

I've been with Wanadoo for about 5 years and never had any problems.

  • I would recommend Madasafish. I have nothing but good things to say about the reliability of their service and their customer support.

I use to be with Pipex, but they don't answer e-mails.....

my advice would be to talk to ntl if you tell them your feelings they will reduce your charges and increase your speed,I know because they have responded to me,Martin has written in detail about your situation, and it works with NTL

PlusNet Broadband Plus would be worth a look. £14.99 for up to 2Mb connection speed but you need a BT phone line (I guess you have an NTL phone line??). The Plus package is not suitable for P2P (file sharing) but it doesn't sound like you do any of that. They also offer a monthly contract option (useful if you aren't sure if you will stay with Plusnet for 12 months) and a modem/connection deal. http://www.plus.net

I would phone NTL and ask for a MAC code so you can migrate your broadband connection to another ISP. Say you can get faster connection speeds for less money elsewhere and NTL may do you a deal. If not take the MAC code and move.

If you go to http://www.adslguide.org you will find reviews of all ISPs and you can decide for yourself which is the best for your parents. For example you will see that you shouldn't go with plus.net as there are far too many disgruntled folks with them.
Ideally you should go with an ISP that only requires a monthly contract.
My top of the list, especially for customer support and technical service is without a doubt https://www.NewNet.co.uk

If they are currently with NTL does that mean they have an NTL phone line? If so that dramatically reduces the options available to your parents. If its a BT line id echo the sentiments of the poster who said check out adslguide.net's forums. You can see the thoughts of each providers users and get a general feel for the service offered.

no wonder your confused because no one ISP is great for everyone... and things can change really fast - pre reg says looks at f2s (who i'm with) well a few weeks ago I would have been singing thier prasies, but take a look at the message board in adslguide.org.uk and you'll see that this once fantastic ISP is now really really bad, the speed slow, the technical support is only open office hours and if people on the adsl forum are to be believed you could be on that 0870 number for sometime just waiting....

basically a good service can go rubbish overnight, I would look at ISP's with monthly contracts you can get out off if it all goes wrong so good luck with the hunt!!!

I will recommend FREENETNAME.CO.UK. They are fine for me and have had no problems since i migrated from Wanadoo.
