...........and if none of you have tried making your own butter I can very highly recommend it. It's easy peasy and really exciting (:o)

There's a thread on here somewhere with instructions but basically all you need is a tub of cream, a biggish clean jar and two wooden spoons.
Just run, run and keep on running!

OP are you anywhere near a market? I get nearly all my fruit and veg there, less middle men, and there's a monthly farmers' market. Also I think the market traders work bloody hard, long days in all weathers, and deserve my money more than the big stores;) I can get a huge bowl of bananas (10 to 12 fruits) for £1, about 3lb apples for £1, and much more choice and less packaging than a supermarket.

Leicester, farmer's market is the last wednesday of every month. Leicester market as it is is bloomin excellent, and you know you're not paying over the odds for someone else to pack it and label it. I dont mind a couple of soggy satsumas if i can get £15 for a pound! I get someone to take me to a farm shop every so often, and get sacks of spuds for £4 but I don't know where it is! LOL middle of the countryside, will let u know!

    Thanks Sarah

Right i've been today. Its a bit scarey because if you even look like you are considering buying, they shout out prices at you lol!

Anyway I got loads of stuff, all for a pound a bowl! Worth going again, and im certainly going to try the farmers market there. Although what with my own butter and eggs, maybe I could set up a stall ha ha ha

I want to echo all the positive posts about veg delivery schemes - I am on my 3rd box now (2 weekly delivery) and it is working out fine. The fruit and veg tastes better and apart from having to give away celeriac (which I find hateful to say the least - I didnt think there was anything worse than swede until I tried eating this) has been pretty good value. It works out dearer than the local market and very slightly more expensive than supermarket but the taste is good and produce fresh. Everything is nearly all UK produce (85% in the box I have). It is great just having everything delivered - and stops me buying exotic stuff at silly prices out of season.

My box scheme allows me to tell them things I dislike and they'll either put in a substitute or just some extra of one of the "standards".

It will be worth asking your lot to put celeriac on your "Do not" list if they have one.
