Two great British institutions but which one would you have prefered to survive?

Very funny! Yes I can live without Cliff but we're very, very sad that our local Woolworths is closing; it was a first-stop shop for things like kiddies clothes, toys and  sweets!

Check out the related 1981 ad http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RJNJCarL5ik&NR=1 BOY A FULL 2 MINUTE ADVERT, THEY MUST HAVE BEEN RICHER THEN ! And the products look so naff by today's standards...and Tim Brooke-Taylor still looked young!

I think Duck is under-rated.....mmmmmm, oh 'eck I'm drooling again.

By the way, I lived in Coalville for 4 years, guess what their main industry was? :D They had a surpisingly "northern" twang to their accent for a town in NW Leicestershire, I picked up a bit ! (now lost)

what did you do in Coalville ?I know it well -or did -used to be the the the bra strap and knicker-underpants elastic capital of the world -with up to 4 big manufacturers there -sadly now only one small company left
and of course the say "me duck"
  • Oh yeah, they did say "me duck" a lot, especially the guys on the Coalville 2nd elevens cricketers! Interesting re lingerie elastic stuff, never knew that! Went on to work for M&S in London, so there's a silly link.....
Actually, lived in a (at the time) new estate in a sleepy village called Whitwick - with Coalville the nearest shopping town 2 miles away. I worked for British Gas R&T at Loughborough who'd relocated from Solihull (and so did I).

1st example doesn't render. From the 2nd example I can see British quality written all over it.:D

Yeah, sorry :embarasse I did loads of work on the databases for the software in M&S's "offshore sourcing" project, or (as they liked to call it "NEW BUYING") ! Now you hate me! But I was just one of many executioners, not the King making the decision...

(BG's impressive R&T division in Lboro has since been taken over by "Advantica", but believe many of the staff I knew got transferred...)

no need to be sorry it was becoming too expensive here not the actual elastic tape manufacturing but the make up section -factories full of sewing machines and their operators.

in fact was a coalville company whom estsablished the first M & S supplier factory offshore in Sri Lanka way back in 1996 and a super factory it is.
