Agreed lots of learned posters have said the same. But have you any thoughts on the above formula as to how much you should have actually saved
How much you need depends on whether you are invested in shares or in savings accounts.
If you are purely in savings accounts and have no other income at all then the best guess would be to divide your total savings by your total expenditure in the current year. If we assume savings will roughly keep pace with inflation then that will tell you when your money will run out.
So say 300K savings and expenditure 20K means you can expect to run out of money in about 15 years. If anything that is a bit optimistic.
Now most people have some other income such as pensions now or in the future (including state pension) so that needs to be factored in.
Now if you have significant amounts in shares then you can factor in that you hope to get real returns on your money (hopefully). That makes a massive difference for a young person.
Personally I am worried that the world economy will collapse when the true danger of global warming become apparent, and we realise that growth is not sustainable, so the historically 3% real returns on shares will not occur in the future. But that is a personal view.MSE. Abandon hope all ye who enter here0 -
