you dont have to log off,

you should only have one library

create 4 separate 'playlists' and name them according to the peoples wishes

then plug in your ipod and click on it in 'devices' on the left, then in the larger window on the right you get 'summary/music/movies/tv shows/podcast' etc, click on 'music'

in this area make sure 'sync music' has a tick in the box

click the circle next the 'selected playlists:' so it goes black

unclick all of the square boxes except the box with your own name - keep it 'ticked'

Next click on 'Music' in the library on the left hand area and make sure you're in 'grid view', click and hold on the album cover and drag it to the playlist with your own name (listed on the bottom left)

keep doing that till you're satisfied you have your ultimate playlist

next in 'devices' on the left, then in the larger window on the right you get 'summary/music/' etc, click on sync in the bottom right corner

that should sort out your problem

Thanks - but given that I have 296 albums on my ipod that would be one big playlist - would it separate it into artists and albums?

Yes. Make a playlist and see.
