I sold an ipod on ebay during the middle of december and now I am getting emails from the buyer saying it is faulty and not holding a charge. now when I sold it, it did hold quite a decent charge for an ipod (battery being poo and all) but there was absolutly nothing wrong with it. I never said on the auction that I offered returns. the only worry I have is if he starts giving me grief and starts asking for his money back or tries to get his money back through paypal. I think he may have damaged it himself and is now trying to get me to refund him I'll just have to see what he says next.

Hi
I have been trading on ebay for two years now and every now and again this type of problem pops up.Buyer claiming item they bought is damged etc.The first few times it happend I just asked for item back and refunded. However after recieving some items that personally i felt had been deliberately damaged - or even were fine ! I was strating to get a bit fed up.I started to REALLY make sure I double checked things and kept photos. Then I had a really rude buyer who claimed a brand new item was empty. So basically I told her no refund- you bought it was fine when I sent it- so tough! You get a lot of honest and dishonest ebayers.
As far as I know buyers have 45 days to do a chargeback - thats if they know about them. I have never personally had this yet done by a buyer but have done it myself. So im not fully aware of all the ins and outs. Personally all I can say is if you are certain it was fine, then stick to your guns.I believe chargebacks for items not as described are tricky.Especailly when an item is not brand new.And to be honest if you buy a second hand electrical item anywhere you are taking a risk. You could maybe drag it along past the 45 days if you want so they are unable to do a chargeback. It could be someting really simple wrong with it and the buyer should maybe check it first. The buyer might be just testing the water to see what you would do.But in my opinion you are not responsable for an item once it has been recieved, used by buyer and for every day that that buyer has it !
If they are successful at a chargeback you can file an unpaid item.
I sell on ebay to give good customer service but also to make a profit- but im not giving goods from my own pocket to people who are dishonest. If im not sure about the condition or feel an item was damged in the post- i refund then when i get it back and claim post office. If im sure ( and especailly if they have had and used it ) that no refund- will take the neg but im not being fleeced. Im sure others will give their views.
I personally have one buyer doing this at the moment - but the damage they caim I have clear photos that the item is perfect- so Im sticking to my guns and will see what happens.0 -
The card clearing service that we use at work (streamline - one of the biggest) confirmed the other day that people can do chargebacks at any point for (an astonishing) 18 months!
From that point of view, at least if you get the goods back, at least you are not left with no goods and a chargeback.
On the other hand, if you description was clear that it was used, and not guarenteed, you can contest the chargeback. If they say it was not as described, you could maybe copy the original desc and send it to dispute the chargeback.
Would be interested to hear if anyone has successfully fought a chargeback from an ebay sale (that a buyer filed against them, not ones filed against sellers)0 -
i find that if a chargeback is filed against you incorrectly it helps to contact paypal directly as youre only given like 500 words to argue your point, contact them via email or telephone and u can add information to the claim that you otherwise wouldnt be able to- e.g. item description, pics etc.:T The best things in life are FREE! :T0

Can anyone tell me how you go about a chargeback?
I filed a complaint with Paypal against a seller who sold me counterfeit goods. Paypal awarded me the case but as there were no funds in the seller's account the case is still open.
Can I do anything via a chargeback?0 -
I think what you did was a chargeback.0

I think if a seller uses Nochex then the buyer cannot start a chargeback. I am going to start using Nochex for expensive items in the future.
"Just to re-iterate, providing you abide by the Nochex terms & conditions and that we believe you have acted in good faith, all emoney that you receive through Nochex will NOT be taken back off you - we basically shoulder that risk for you."I Hate Jobsworths!!!0 -

As far as I know you won't see a penny unless the seller puts money into the account then paypal will transefer it you but if the seller was only selling counterfit goods he will probably just open a new paypal account so funds cannot be taken out by paypal and start over again.
I won a case about 12 months ago and never seen a penny of the money I was owed due to the fact the seller emptied his paypal account so no money could be transfered to me0 -
See i don't understand this because i had a chargeback down against me when there wasn't enough in the account and paypal put my account minus and they made me pay them back.
Why do some people not get the money and others do??Accept that some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.0 -

The only thing I can think of is if there is no bank account registered with paypal then they cannot take what is not their but I could be wrong as im only having a guess0 -
PayPal cannot take money out of your bank account without your permission, what happened to Carrie happens to a lot of people when chargebacks are done against them. If they don't have the funds in their account it goes into minus. PayPal then say you have 180 days (I think) to put the account back to £0.00 or they send the baliffs round. Whether they do or not is another matter.0
