Holiday leaving tomorrow - Cancelled

Hi,
My mum is due to leave to Bangcok tomorrow at 13.30pm. She still has'nt been notified by her travel agent (Thomson) that the flights are cancelled.
I called the Ops team who confirmed that all flights are cancelled.
Any ideas if she can claim compensation for not being notified? She now has 3 weeks off work and nothing to do.
Thanks

There may be some form of comp for the company not telling her, however as far as I was aware the airlines were not cancelling until the last minute in some cases, when was the tour operator informed (thomson) of the cancellation?I am a Travel Agent
My company’s ABTA numbers are P6046. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.0 -

Its Thomson worldwide that she's travelling with, are they not the same company? Apparantly they knew late yesterday/1st thing this morning.0 -
I think you need to get this into perspective. Yes, Thomson should have told her as soon as the flight was cancelled. However, you have to consider that she was not the only person that needed to be told, and the decision could have only just been made. It is likely that someone was going through a list ringing people, and they just hadn't reached her yet.
If you are looking for compensation, I would not expect anything more than £25 off your next holiday, and nothing in cash. This is something that was completely beyond the control of any agent or airline.Gone ... or have I?0 -
I agree with what Dmg has said.
As for having 3 weeks' off work, that's unfortunate so what's to stop her going back to work and postponing the holiday until next year?

If she really wants to go away, she should contacts Thompson ASAP in the morning, they may be able to find her another holiday somewhere else. Yes, they probably should have tried to contact her, but it's possible they may have written, in which case she wouldn't receive it till tomorrow at the earliest anyway. It's fairly extraordinary circumstances, and their crisis management team is probably trying to deal with customers who are in India as well. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

Yes that is the reason The airports are closed. Flights from Here in malaysia and Singapore to Thialand all cancelled as well. A state of emrgency has now been declared at the airports. Protestors have taken over. Thousands of passengers stranded.
I,m sure if she contact TA they will find her something else very quickly.0 -
Is this a holiday booked through Thomson (as opposed to flights only?). If it's a holiday, the T&Cs state that no compensation will be paid for 'civil disturbances' or 'riots'. They say they will offer an alternative holiday (and refund the difference if it is less) or refund the whole holiday.
I wouldn't hold out much hope for compensation (other than perhaps a goodwill gesture).

I know it's not nice being left in the lurch at the last minute.
But I'm sure if your mum thinks about it, she'd rather the holiday be cancelled, than have the tour operator insist that she travel to a place that is currently not safe?I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0
