About 90% dont lock their cases those that do draw a natural suspicion (potentially)

If anything he/she would probably think "hmm, there is a lock on this, there must be something of value in it"
OK.... Convince me with some fact or anecdotal evidence that a secured/locked piece of luggage attracts more attention from thieves than unsecured luggage?

Convince me that the thieves handling my luggage from casual to hardcore are more likely to seek cases with locks to burst rather than take a quick squint in an unsecured case?

Convince me that thieves handling my luggage don't use an altogether different criteria when targeting bags such as opportunity, luggage quality, Airline priority/first/business tags, ease of access, etc.

    I am all ears. :D

    Likewise.

You convince me that a lock makes any difference whatsoever.

(but lets not bring in issues outside the factors originally discussed - that being a lock, or no lock)

I have not claimed that a lock makes a difference as to whether it draws attention from would be thieves.... You have..... So convince me? :)

You have stated on two occasions that locked luggage attracts the attention of thieves, so I don't see how challenging that statement can be seen as bringing in outside issues?

P.S. Don't take it personally, it's just that given some of the comments on this thread, it's a point I am up for debating. :)

If you look back over my posts you will see i have always 'assumed' since i am not a thief and do not have any factual evidence locks attract thieves.

What i meant by outside issues were those such as the quality of the case, first etc..

And i dont take it personally - i welcome debate - well, not all ;)

This, that you and several otehrs before have said, is just silly, when you consider the number of people that a checked-in suitcase goes through before it gets to me at the end airport.
It's like saying that locking your house is silly because it will mean there are things to steal there, or locking your car when you don't have bags in it, and so on.

You may want lots of people going through your clothes and books, but I'll refrain from that, thanks...
how is it silly?! what u locking ur case for?! we know baggage control can go through suspect bags so why draw more attention to ur bag? if you have major valuables in it and u lock it. the lock will be seen and ur case will be opened...

same as puttin 'FRAGILE' on a RM parcel... it'l be tosssed about!!!

LOCK = something to hide/valuable to the person handling the luggage. therefore more to gain on whatever is found...
    NO LOCK = regular case...

Not really obvious, no ...... So let me get this right.

All luggage with a lock on it contain something valuable?
All luggage with a lock on will be spotted by thieves?
All luggage with a lock on it will be opened?

    Hmmmm

  • Airport security no longer accepts locked luggage at any airport. All baggage goes through x-ray screening devices these days, however many pieces are still randomly searched manually. If your luggage is locked, it's an invitation for inspection. Security will break the lock off to search your bags so don't be surprised if they show up with locks missing.

The discussion relates to luggage being checked in ..... I assume that your comment doesn't?

My comment relates 'check-in' luggage any time after baggage drop/check in. The comment is not appropriate to hand luggage because even if you put a lock on it, you would take it off at inspection if required because it would be with you at all times.
I found out that they break the lock off a samsonite because i know someone it happenned to. It was quite annoying because the lock was integral (not a xmas cracker padlock) and cost £40 for a samsonite dealer to repair. The repairer told us that most locks on cases were easy to get off and are not requires to keep the bag closed. However, some samsonites use the lock as the main clasp for holding the case closed.
