I was tempted by this, even though the PCW website is showing "unavailable due to high demand"

From what I can see, the Linksys one is a cable modem router - so fine if you're on the likes of Telewest Broadband or NTL.

However, the Amazon one that Rizla01 quotes is for those with an ADSL 'broadband' connection - ie not a cable one!
  • Picked up the Linksys modem / router from Currys in Telford yesterday, but it is definitely an ADSL one and I am on cable!! Not sure if I can just use the ethernet ports from my cable modem so going to try it and if not will have to return it :(
Just a note - there were none on display and no mention of the offer, so it's best to take the product number 459034. I asked at customer services and a nice lady found one for me!

THIS seemed like a good deal for those that missed the recent linksys one at PC WORLD.

Free USB wireless adapter (was £26) Included for £62.97 inc Delivery.

Price not quite as good perhaps but must be a good second best if you are also in need of the 'Freebie' - and it's Netgear.

i am with ntl broadband will this router work ok plus is it easy to plug into a playstation 2 or xbox

I would take the 3com any day over anything else and here's why.

Had the previous model of 3com, left it on/connected for 18months solid, never once dropped connection in use, it just plain worked. 256-bit WPA-PSK - security, 2 antennae which helped the range - worked all over my house - victorian brick walls. Even the laptop card could pick up next doors wireless network!

It went bang when a water pipe in the loft leaked onto it. :-(

Bought this very Netgear DG384Gv2 + WG511 as a replacement - range is poor in comparison, can no longer get signals all over house. When I can get a signal it will drop out maybe once every day or so. Unworkable. The laptop card could not pick up next doors signal either :-( Tried the 3com PC card to connect to the NETGEAR and range did not improve so poor router and card from NETGEAR.

Bought the later model of 3com from staples with PC card and USB card. Works just like the old one. Had it plugged in for a month now, not dropped connection once, range as good as ever and it comes with a LIFETIME warranty. ROCK SOLID.

Anyone want to buy a Netgear DG384Gv2 + WG511 from me? I certainly don't want it.

PC World in store price for the Netgear router + USB was as said over £100, if you go into Currys the same thing is £69.99 :)

I complained in PC world as there online price was £69.99 but wouldn't do it for that in store...so I walked 100yrds to Currys and got it :)

    Funny Thing That.

I popped into PC W to make a purchasse based on the internet price and had the same reaction.

Told that I could only have it at that price if I bought on the 'net'.

O.k I said,' Can you order it for me on the net please. This he did. 5 Mins and I saved myself a few quid.

Anyone tell me the logic in this?:confused:

Yup, after scouring the forums for whether it was solid enough, and no improvement.

I suspect the Netgear is probably OK for thinner walled plasterboard new houses and where range is not a problem, I just couldn't believe it was hyped so much when the 3com stuff has just plain worked for me and over greater distance - 3 brick walls (one double bricked).

Way way back I used a Linksys cable router with NTL broadband and that was solid enough also, just really disappointed with the netgear - bought it as my ISP recommended it.

This will work fine with NTL broadband but to use your PS2 or XBox wirelessly you will need to get a special wireless bridge. However to plug it in with an ethernet cable would be straightforward.
