3G - Is it worth it?
Hi - I'm going to sign up for a new phone shortly and was wondering what peoples views were on 3G.
I'm quite a geek so the ability to see email etc on your phone sounds good - but is it really worth it.
Would appreciate anyone's opinion on whether to get 12 months of 2G, or 12 of 3G.
Thanks

3G is fast, but if you want to connect to email servers and do surfing etc. you should steer clear of 3 as they restrict you to their sites only unless you pay a lot of extra money too !
You should not really need a 3g connection to receive email as this works fine generally on 2G (unless you have large attachments).
I am on 3, and am very pleased with the high speed downloads and the ability to view newsclips, videos, TV etc., but am disappointed that they lock you in to their network (welcome to our network is the ad !).To infinity and beyond!0 -

Surely they all lock you into their network0 -
I've had a varity of handsets on various networks, my latest is on three (3G), in general it has some good/bad points ....
Good
Internet/email/video good
Bad
variable 3G coverage (although slowly improving), appauling if you're on the 'edge' of a 3G service area. The service is designed to switch to 02 when you're not in a 3G area - but there is no automatic/seamless transfer between a 3G and O2 'cell' hence the call is lost - so on the 'edge' of a service area or when traveling between cells (that require passing between 3G to 02), calls are frequently dropped.
Hope that information helps.0 -

Not for the internet !To infinity and beyond!0 -
I'ge got a 2G phone (Sony Erricson p910i) and I can access the internet and POP email on it.
I don't see the point of 3G ("oooooh watch football and the news and tv on your mobile" "no thanks - I've got a tv for that"). Unless you're 12 and you want to videophone your mates then I don't see a point of getting it.
However if the best deal is on a 3G tarrif then go for it.0 -
mr_fishbulb, I think you have it about right !To infinity and beyond!0
