If you get an NHS dentist root fillings and normal fillings (and extractions) are the same price around £40, earlier in the year my dentist gave me the choice of pullng or root canal - I said which one's cheaper and she said they were the same price but root canal takes longer to do.
Shame that doesn't apply to my nhs dentist then....
A filling falls in the middle band of payments, approx £30-40- each.
root canal is much more, as it takes so much longer it's more costly to the dentist than one simple filling.
An extraction is approx £60-70.
Add on every check up that you need while this is going on, plus the cost of the filling, etc, and i certain;y can't get root canal AND a filling for less than £50!
If it was that cheap, I'm sure people would be flocking to get their teeth sorted.0 -
Well in that case your NHS dentist is conning you. The bands are pretty clear, and root canals come under the same band as a filling. It also doesn't matter how many of each thing you need. The filling shouldn't cost you any extra, and all visits for a given course of treatment are covered by the one charge. Its all set out by the government, as you can see here http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1781.aspx?CategoryID=74&SubCategoryID=74
Mu hubby should shortly be completing a course of 7 fillings and one root canal over 3 visits, which has cost £44.60. Your desntist is either charging you private costs, or is up to something very dodgy.0 -
The killers of baby P will be getting free dentist treatment!!!0

Exactly Ebany - the only provisio my dentist makes is that you have to have less than 2 months between each appointment in the course of treatment, otherwise it counts as a new course and you may have to pay twice (and as the sign says - for the same treatment)0

These aren't NHS prices.
If you're in Scotland or N. Ireland, they still have the old NHS system where each different treatment does have a different cost and all the costs add up, but if you're in England or Wales, then it is just one fee per course of treatment.
Either way, the fees you quote seem dear for NHS fees in Scotland or NI.
It seems like you're a private patient. Ifyou thought you were an NHS patient it's time to have a chat with your dentist, and if you don't get a good explaination, then I'd inform the local PCT of what's going on there. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0
