    Hey.
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you will have to pay, unless you are in receipt of any benefits like income support.
I'm a 19 year old university student, and recently had to make an emergency appointment for a toothache. lol
It sound funny now, and you may laugh, but at the time it was seriously painful!!!
Anyway, the first thing they asked me was, that that i was now over 18, and was not entitled to free treatment, and would i be willing to pay?
I would have gladly paid anything, to stop the pain, and the bill ended up being: £44.60!!!!
This included an examination, xrays and root canal treatment!!

Fillings fall into the same category, so you can expect to pay what i did!!

The following website may be able to explain the rules better than me:
    http://www.whatprice.co.uk/dentist/nhs-prices.html

    Hope that helps.

Anyone over the age of 18 or 19 (not sure which), even in fulltime education, doesn't get free dental on NHS. I didn't realise this, they asked how old I was, I said I was still in education and they said it didn't matter I still had to pay! eek!
  • yeah i'm 21 and in college. have not been to dentist in 3 years because of this, i just can't afford it!

Everytime I go to the dentist he says I'm fine and I should not come back for 9-12 months as theres no need. (usually I go every 6 months)

After all the beer & fags no room for luxuries?? :D
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

No money for beer and fags if you're at college rather than university!

i was living in dundee for 2 years n no dentists there were taking on nhs pateints.
i went to the dentist here for a check up in August and was told i needed £40 of work done which i couldn't afford as i hadn't started back college n didn't have my student loan in.
He also took xrays that day and tried to charge me £5 for it there n then, which i still haven't paid. If i'd known at the time i wouldn't have let him take the xrays.

The funny thing is i only got my braces off this year, and never had to pay for them!

You can get most your dental bill paid if you fill in the form mentioned above, as both my sons are at Uni and the dentist told them to make sure they filled it in.
Re the above price that included root canal..wow.. that is incredibly cheap! I've had root canal, and it cost over £200, so they must have given you a discount.

If you get an NHS dentist root fillings and normal fillings (and extractions) are the same price around £40, earlier in the year my dentist gave me the choice of pullng or root canal - I said which one's cheaper and she said they were the same price but root canal takes longer to do.
