MSN Messenger 7.5 Woes :(

Help! I've been having problems with MSN Messenger 7.5 for months. (I've got version 7.5.0322 currently).

People keep saying I appear as Offline when I'm not, though sometimes it's ok, and I don't get any audio "tinkling" at all.

MSN Messenger used to work fine in the past.

Reinstalling doesn't seem to help either. Can anyone help? Any suggestions appreciated.

Uninstall Messenger Completely from add/remove programs then restart PC
and get Messenger from here....http://messenger.msn.com/xp/downloadDefault.aspx choose download and install later, when the download is complete then choose run.

When you sign in make sure your sign in status is online, also set Messenger not to start up when wimdows starts up, you need to click on "Sign in" and just below where it says "password" make sure that is set to "online".

If you are having sound problems with messenger try this.

Get a Microphone and insert in Mic Socket.
Start, Control Panel, Sounds Speech and Audio Devices, Sounds and Audio Devices,
click on Voice Tab and then click on Test Hardware...

    Thanks for replying, Intel.

Well, that's another problem, I've never been able to get a headset microphone to work on here. A karaoke mic(!), not the headset, works on the mic socket at the back..but the dedicated inputs for a headset at the front do absolutely nothing.

MSN Messenger used to have audio, but it's still silent. Music audio and even Yahoo Messenger seem to work ok.

My MSN Messenger accepts file transfers automatically without me even clicking on them, which is very annoying. Forgot to mention that too.

And another thing...I've just used webmessenger as recommended by a pal, and it works! I appear online and it tinkles! Technology stumps me sometimes!!!

The Ports on the Front are connected to the monitor? If that's the case, there'll need to be a cable going from the PC Monitor to the Back of the Tower anyway!

Run the Audio Wizard after you have checkd connections correctly - Tools, Audio & Video Setup.

As for automatic file transfers, I think you may have Messenger Plus. There is an option in there to disable it, it's not on by default so you may have tinkered with it :P. Even better, you may wish to uninstall it completely - it's good software, but plugins can cause conflicts, and may be causing your troubles.

Also, NOTE that Messenger Plus contains optional spyware to support the developer (and boy if he FORCED you to use the spyware, he'd be a millionaire!). If you insist on reinstalling it (without plugins!), ensure you OPT OUT of installing the spyware!

    HTH.

    Matt.

Ah, you're right, I do have Messenger Plus, hopefully I've switched off the automatic transfers now. Thanks. I don't remember tinkering with it.. There's no plug ins, though.

The headphone/mic inputs for the headset are at the front of the base unit, they're not connected to the monitor in any way

My main MSN Messenger is still tinkle free, however. And I'm still appearing offline.

    MSN Webmessenger works no problem.

Make sure when you sign in that you sign in online.

I think I can tell you exactly why everyone says you show Offline. This happens to people all the time!

(though its normally the other way, ie your offline but everyone can still see you)

You have installed MSN messenger but windows messenger is still running in the background.

Go to your programs list click on windows messenger and untick all the option, can't remember exactly what they are but things like "automatically sign in" and "run in background".

Windows messenger and MSN messenger are two different programs but both use your MSN profile. Most people think MSN messenger is an upgrade to windows messenger, its NOT, you now have both running.

    To stop windows messenger starting..

Open Windows Messenger, Start, All Programs, Have a look for it in there
somewhere its called Windows Messenger not MSN Messenger, click on it
and it will open, then click on, Tools, Options, Preferences,

Now take out the tick in, Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts, then OK. Now just click the Top Right Red X to close (minimize the program) now restart PC ans that should do the trick.

Also If you have MSN Messenger I suggest you do the same as that could be starting when Windows starts up and may be signing in offline, (but I doubt it)

The 'appearing offline problem' with MSN Messenger might not be at your end. This problem affects everyone from time to time and I've found the usual cause is either a problem at the MSN Messenger server end or a problem at your ISP's end, either of which can cause a time-out in your communication with the MSN Messenger servers, which causes the server to assume you have logged off - and subsequently incorrectly informs your contacts of that!

If this is happening very regularly, there might be a problem at your end with your firewall configuration or your router - or with your connection being overwhelmed (and hence unable to always respond to the MSN Messenger servers quickly enough).

How do you connect to the Internet?
