  • It is not that you can see what they are doing. I entered payment details to pay by gift card (I don't ever shop there and they couldn't get an item in store - told me to buy online).

I went to buy an item as a one off and entered my gift card number and it still put it through as a credit account! Even though I had paid via another method. I rang CS straight away, she told me over the phone that sometimes if you are logged in for long enough they will just automatically open a credit account! She said that they didn't process the gift card and just put it on the account instead - she didn't know why. I am absolutely disgusted with them! She said she will sort it on Monday... I will NEVER shop online with them again!

What a disgusting way to treat customers!

I have just had the same experience. Ordered some school trousers for my daughter yesterday, selected the paid delivery option, paid for the trousers with my credit card and they still opened an account!. I sent a very stroppy email and they replied acknowledging that I had selected the paid delivery option and so should not have had an account set up. For those of you who say it's the customers fault for not reading the t&C, I cut and pasted Next's T&Cs into a word document and used the word count facility - they are 43 pages and over 23,000 (twenty three thousand!!!!!) words long. The fact that Next put this right when a customer calls them is beside the point - they are clearly happy to deceive customers - they used to be a respected brand but now should hang their heads in shame. If you have any doubts about whether what they are doing is just sloppy practice or downright dishonest then have a look at a site called dark patterns dot org. This has lots of examples of website (including Next) who DELIBERATELY design their websites in a way which will mislead customers into performing an action they don't want to do. The chap who runs the site - Harry Brignull - is campaigning for a code of practice for web designers. I support what he is trying to do 100%

Does it say there and then if you have been successful in opening an account with them?

I ordered some trousers, made sure I unchecked the Next Directory box and chose to have order delivered to a store - the next page in red letters 'you have to pay by card on this occasion' or words to that effect - so paid by card and completed my order but does this mean they have done a credit check on me and I have failed it, for the sake of a £30 pair of trousers?

I wanted to buy a decorative accessory from Next last yr and I got to the register part. Put in my surname and because it's double barrelled I got told my surname was invalid :rotfl:The shop in town ordered it for me, OH paid £10 cash.

    No it doesn't.
  • It is 29.04.2013 and Next is still misleading people with their credit scam.
I have ordered a jumper which I am still paying of just like many of you guys. I mean is anyone ever will do something about it? Marketing scams like this should be taken to the court! Won't be using their website again!
  • Stay on the checkout screen too long and they 'always' run a credit search in the background. Why can't they be a bit clearer and honest?

Call them to convert the account to a pay as you go, but your credit search is still clocked with the credit file agencies. You will have to ask them to get it removed for you. The person will not normally do it voluntarily because it will affect their 'stats'. The advisor is trained to end the call as soon as possible.

I stopped shopping for the following reasons:
Indian call centres which repeatedly screwed my orders, then they pass you round the merry-go-round.
0844 numbers, costs a fortune from a mobile because you will spend ages on hold and passed around if you have a query. They will not give you an alternative normal number to call. I wonder why?
Everytime i ordered a non-next brand item, they held my order and needed me to call back to confirm more security questions. Intrusive.
Everytime i ordered items for a next day shop collection, they would hold my order and yup they needed to confirm more security. Every bloomin time!
Forget ordering gift cards and vouchers. Yes you've guessed it, they hold it until you call them back.
So, the click, order and forget is a bit of a myth with Next. More like click, order and expect nothing unless you call them back. More phone calls. More holding. More passing around!

    Thats my rant over.

Oh, i stopped shopping with them now!

Actually, there are occasions where getting sent to a pay now screen is a result of the credit account not being offered.
BUT, as a result of a credit search.

You're really better off calling and asking for a pay as you go account. Or just buy elsewhere that don't employ underhand tactics.

I have been taken in the same way. I thought I had paid - I am sure I entered my debit card details - and then later got sent a message saying I had to pay a minimum amount. I can see this thread started in 2008!

I have read that for every new CC applied for, and I presume any form of credit, it requires a search, and the more you have the lower your credit score. So, my question is whether they are allowed to do this, and what can I do about it.

I have just ordered some bedroom furniture from the Next website and entered my credit card details. The screen then told me that the card was invalid and that they had opened a credit account. I spend hundreds of pounds each week on this card and have used it directly after buying from Next. In my view there is no intention of taking payment directly only to open a credit account for you. Will never buy from them again.
