Barring Withheld Telephone Numbers

Does anyone know if you can bar incoming calls with withheld telephone numbers.

I remember a couple of years ago i dialled a number and because i was with BT at the time and had a withheld number myself they would not accept the call.

Would i need to phone BT or contact Talk Talk.

Thanks in advance

You can do this with NTL but they charge you for the privilage, theres also the issue of if someone is injured eg car crash the hospital may not be able to contact you, What is the problem your having ? if its cold calling you should register with TPSONLINE.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

I am registered with TPS but have also just paid BT to stop withheld numbers from calling me. I was fed up of silent calls.
I used to work in A+E, I would imagine that if the hospital want/need to get in touch with you they will try other ways if they are not able to get through because of this service.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

If your line rental is with BT you contact them, and if its with Talk Talk you contact them.

BT call it Anonymous call reject see for details and costs https://www.bt.com/SelectServices/index.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0208751781.1136329435@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceaddgjfjkdmgcflgcefkdffndfli.0&showsub3=SS_advanced_features&subProduct=SS_Anonymous_Call_Rejection&showsub4=SS_anonumouscall&obsNoSee=Y&vStore=1350&obsPage=%2fSelectServices%2findex.jsp&obsType=LINK&obsOID=53755

I cant find a list of advanced call features available on TT site. So its difficult to know whether TT support it,or what they charge.

  • barring withheld numbers isn't a great solution. If you are waiting on a return call from a GP or the council or police telephone you, you will have barred those numbers too, as all those services use number withheld. There will be other private and public services who will withold their number too, and you may miss a valuble call.

I thought that most calls from institutions could still come through, as they are not withheld but unavailable because of the way it comes through a switchboard.

Wonder why GPs, Council, Police, Government, etc. withold their number?? Perhaps it has something to do with you not finding out their real number so you can bypass their 0870/0845/0844 number !!

Some large institutions may have number withheld when calling as when someone was contacted and didn't answer the phone, they later did 1471 or equivalent, and the number was usually the switchboard. In most cases the poor person on the switchboard wouldn't have a clue who called originally as there would be thousands of lines. (This is what happened where I work anyway!)

  • I think a lot of public services don't deliberatly withhold their number. As someone said, the calls may go through a switchboard first, or it's automatically withheld for security and privacy reasons.
  • Numbers from switchboards are usually withheld due to all calls from the PBX connecting from a channel off the main PRI/ISDN number. If the line identity was revealed and you called it, you would probably never get an answer as the number relates to the line rather the Direct Dialing In number (callers extension).

A lot of companies are now attaching a line identity tag to there outgoing line to allow connection where anonymous call reject is active on the line.

Also, if a company want's to speak to you bad enough then they will call on a line where the CLI is presented!

To apply anonymous call rejection to your line dial *227# to cancel dial #227# and to check the current setting dial *#227#

I used to be a 100 telephone operator. Anyone withholding their number and wanting to contact you if you have anonymous caller reject can do so by getting the operator to connect them. I had to do it on numerous occasions for the police/ambulance.
