I called the place where I got my nieces ears done and where I've had my piercings because I couldn't remember the name.

They use pressure levers. Same basic principal as the gun but they take into account that adult ears are very different to childs ears (unlike the gun, same amount of force used each time, for adult or child).

No part of the lever touches the childs ear. I remember the studs and the part of the pressure lever that holds them (therefore touches the childs ear) were taken from protective wrapping in front of me and went right into the bin afterwards. Plus they'll use titanium studs, which are best for healing.

As I said, it was all over in two seconds (they still do both ears at the same time) and she didn't even flinch. She was chuffed with them as soon as they were done.

Plus with a professional piercer they usually recommend you going back four weeks later for a check up, not an option you get with the likes of claires.

Hope that's been of some help

I personally pierce ears in my tanning salon. The guns we use are Studex, done lots of children with these and none cried yet. Very painless, quick and sterile system. The rings/studs are in sealed sterilised packs. However this does not mean your childs ear could not have a bad reaction, depends on the individual. If ear remains red after 3 days remove it.

Thanks to everyone - now having serious thoughts as to whether I will get them done or not now!

Please do. I regret having my DD done at 10. Having a earring ripped out 3 days later in school due to a simple accident was tramatic. I know the same accident could have happened at any age but its worse for little one!

I have alot of piercings and I wouldnt have it done with a gun either! I'd also wait until at least 14yrs old. I had my first piercing at 16 and I'm glad as I saw a girl get her earing caught on someone elses coat as we ran to catch buses home when at school (20 years ago!). A bit of mess. I've already said that if my daughter wants piercing she has to wait until 14/16 and then she can decide for herself on the subject.

    Hope that helps :rudolf:

    Hello
Just a quick note to say don't worry to much. I had my ears pierced when I was 15 years old they weren't matched very well and they used a needle. My ears went very red and it was painful and infected so after a year a gave up. 3 years later I had them done with a gun. This was much better as it wasn't so infected afterwards and they matched but again I must be one of those people who can not wear earrings (I have a slight reaction to metal) but even found wearing gold made my ears weep so I gave up and let my ears close.
So you can imagine when my daughter who is nine wanted her ears done I was concerned. I got a recomendation from someone who had afew piercings and took her to one of those goth type places in birmingam. They were very professional and used a gun explaining everything fully, they made sure everything was clean, matched up her ears and let her chose her earrings. She has never had a problem. Her ears healed really well and she has had no sign of infection and this was 6 months ago. The only time we had a problem was when she changed over her earrings after 6 weeks to some from Claires which were very fiddly and made her ears bleed. I think its best to use someone who has an interest in piecing rather than some young girl who works in Claires and who has been on a training course.
But if ever I stray from the path I follow

Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more
