You are correct, i personaly am very against giving my bank details out to anybody on ebay.
If i was mearly posting on this thread to gain referals, i would need 100 just to recieve £10, hardly worth it imo.
It was for feedback and to make people awere of an alternative.

Thb i think you are having a personal dig at me again, because i reported yourself to the abuse team, and a Mod had to post guidance.
I hope i am very wrong.

Please feel free to make more valuable comments about Moneybrookers and avoid personal attacks.

I am sorry if you feel personally attacked, plumb1, and I can't recall any complaints based on any report you made.

Please inform yourself about using bank transfers on eBay and associated risks (or lack of them) before you make negative statements about them.

Your multiple postings of your Moneybookers referral link, and your ignoring of forum posting rules, speak for themselves.

Very funny. You replaced a link to the refferal post with a link to the refferal board (both these links are against the rules of the site). You could have just as easily replaced the link with a link to www.moneybookers.com and your post would have fitted the rules of this site. It looks like you are taking the pee at the moment.

    Reported to abuse.

Sorry, i know it must seem like i am taking the pee,but i wasn,t (only give you bullets to shoot me with wouldn't it)
I did replace the link to the general referal board and not a direct link to my post, i missread the post:doh: , but is is now altered, so hopefuly we can carry on with the subject.

    Once again SORRY.

It is everyone's choice to give out there bank details to everyone, and i limit this greatly (personal choice).
If you/others wish to give your details out to possible scammers, that is yours and their choice and i do not wish to do this.

Thats is why Paypal have grown so big, which is why i am very much interested in this UK company with MUCH less fees, than paypal.

As for multiple posts as far as i am aware i have made 2, 1 in the referal section, and a further 1 here, which i have altered to mooneybookers direct, when i was made aware of the rules.
Hopefuly, we can now get back to the pros and cons of MB.

No, its not against ebay rules, it is that they heavy promote Paypal, because then they get 2 bites of your cherry(money).

Moneybrookers is a UK based company, regulated by the FSA, unlike Ebay and Paypal which are American.

The issue of electronic money is a 'regulated activity' under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and the EU directive on electronic money. Moneybookers Ltd. is authorised by the FSA to issue electronic money as a specialised electronic money issuer subject to regulatory requirements and supervision.

Yes, stay well clear of Western Union(nigerian/canadian scammers).
But i have found Nochex to be fine.
    Thank for you comments.

Thanks but I think you're missing a (posibly disturbing) trick here.
I was referring to the new "Safe Payments Policy" outlined in an eBay news release on 18th December and detailed here.

    Specifically:
Sellers may not ask buyers to send cash through instant money transfer services (non-bank, point-to-point cash transfers) such as Western Union or Moneygram. Finally, sellers may not request payment through online payment methods not specifically permitted in this policy.
Paypal is pretty much the only method "specifically permitted"!
    Can I help?

rdwarr, we need to distinguish between what eBay want, and what they can enforce. They clearly want people to use Paypal because it makes them a very healthy living if people do, but they have no legal leg to stand on prescribing to people how they exchange money.

Having said this, the recent measure to ban Western Union (with Western Union's agreement) from auction descriptions is a positive measure by eBay, since so many people were conned by 'nigerian' scammers abusing Western Union.

To the best of my knowledge, Moneybookers (and Bidpay, Eggpay, NOCHEX etc) continue to be allowed to be mentioned in auction descriptions, as are bank transfers (just do a search on ebay.co.uk for Moneybookers....mind you, there are tons of auctions still mentioning Western Union, too).

The main differences between bank transfers and Moneybookers are
    • bank transfers are, within the UK, absolutely free of charge. Moneybookers charge (I believe it is 34p for sending money by email, and withdrawals from Moneybookers accounts cost approx £1.30. BTW, this can make Moneybookers more expensive than Paypal for low cost transactions!)
    • bank transfers are faster than Moneybookers, and will become more so over the next 12-24 months when UK banks implement 'instant' transfers
    • there are limits as to how much money you can transfer with Moneybookers in any 90 day period. These limits vary from person to person but max is £18,555. With bank transfers, I am only limited to the amount I have at my disposition (which, if I am a large trader, is more than £18K in 3 months).

In addition, you can get interest for money sitting in bank accounts - there is no interest to be had on money you have in Moneybookers (and you must have funds in Moneybookers before you can send any money).

Bank transfers are already the norm on eBay sites on the European continent (where Paypal has, magically, much much lower charges than in the UK!!), with eBay even offering special functionality for paying by bank transfer.

I believe this will also become the case in the UK, as the processing time for bank transfers gets reduced to hours or minutes from the 2-4 days it takes currently, and as UK people become more "bank transfer savvy".

There is a good discussion about bank transfers on this eBay Forum thread. The very first post in the thread summarises everything very nicely.
(n.b. there is also useful information about Moneybookers on the eBay forums).

Does anyone know what buyer protection there is using moneybookers on ebay? If I paid for an auction using this service, and the seller didn't send out the item, using Paypal, I could file a complaint, and it would be down to the seller to prove that he sent out the item. If he couldn't prove it, Paypal could do a chargeback. It seems that there is no option for this using moneybookers. This would make me feel a bit uneasy paying for an item using this service. Once I had paid for the item. My money would be gone whether I received the item or not with no option of doing a chargeback.

You would still have the option to invoke the eBay buyer protection - eBay don't advertise this one too much, they push the Paypal one. That is - they do this in the UK. On ebay.de, for instance, where Paypal is about as unpopular as the plague, they are quite open about the eBay buyer protection.

This would probably be sufficient for most low to medium value items. For anything higher, you could use the Moneybookers escrow service - though this costs 1% (and min €2).

I haven't (touch wood) ever had a dispute with a seller, so I can't comment further on the pros and cons of the different approaches. Just feel that using Moneybookers would be more complex than Paypal or bank transfers - one of the reasons why I haven't used, and don't intend to use, Moneybookers on eBay.

Except they charge you £15 for it so its not really worth it for low value items.
