Thanks for an inspiring thread Jim, read about the first 30 or so threads. Did you manage to get your money from First Direct for your Bank Charges?
I know you said you had to take a £2000 pay cut for a short while, am I right in assuming you have now got that back now? What is your second job then? Are you still doing that?
As to earn say an extra £2000 you could do say 5 hours a week and just make extra mortgage payments etc.
Also, a belated very sorry to hear about your grandfather. It certainly sounds like he lead a full and eventful life.
Best of luckLive for what tomorrow has to bring, not what yesterday has taken away0 -

Many thanks for your kind regards.
First direct eventually told me to go take a running jump after the oft ruled in favour of the banks, although I did get £150ish back from them so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I stopped the second job in Jan of this year and am doing just fine with out it- I have my life back and I would rather starve than having to do that again.
Now everything has calmed down in the economy, work at the bank is really good just like it used to be years ago, in fact there is a really nice atmosphere there and we are not worried about redundancy anymore, we have just recruited and added 20% new bodies to the dept and restructured the work we do to take on a wider case load. From July 1st will be be working a compressed week of just 4 days with weekends and Wednesdays off throughout the summer and there is still overtime available if needed.
I still think about my Granddad a lot, not in a sad way cos there is nothing to be sad about, but over the last few days with all the news about Dunkirk I've thought a lot about his service and sacrifice that he made during WW2 so that I and people like me wouldn't have to. His generation gifted us with safety, stability and security like we have never known before. These are the thoughts I have now when I think of Afghanistan, just maybe, we don't recognise as a nation the importance of what the brave young men and women of all services do to keep us safe and are to tied up in the political wrangles of the right and wrongs of conflict, all the more realistic when on Wednesday this week a hearse carrying the coffin of a soldier passed me by.
Anyway the sun is shining and I have booked the day as holiday to enjoy it, off to get the car washed then I am going to a little wine bar by the harbour with a copy of the girl with the dragon tattoo, and my ipod (lot of the smiths at the moment) to sit outside and slowly pickle my liver as I haven't had a drink for months, not because I am teetotal but my pregnant friend has been, well, pregnant so I haven't had the opportunity to drink. She gave birth a few days ago, it was two weeks late and weighed 10.5lbs ! Apparently a hundred years ago they would have both died ! I've seen a photo of her baby alongside another the day it was born and it is twice the size, another big well done to the NHS and medical science.
Stop moaning everyone and enjoy the sunshine. Hic.:beer:0 -
Here's a solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at the airports.
Have a booth that you can step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on you.
It would be a win-win for everyone, and there would be none of this crap about racial profiling and this method would eliminate a long and expensive trial. Justice would be quick and swift. Case closed!
This is so simple that it's brilliant. I can see it now: you're in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion.
Shortly thereafter an announcement comes over the PA system, "Attention standby passengers we now have a seat available on flight number..."0 -

That had me laughing out loud Jim. :rotfl: Just popped in to say hello. The simplest ideas are always the best.I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0
