Does that mean £6K per person or £6k between you?

    6K between you.

Don't worry, it is more a concern if you have got £20K stuffed under the mattress. ;)

Oh ok- I should take a photo of 'under the mattress' then instead, to prove it's not there! :D

I'd do the kitchen cupboards and the toilet cistern too ... and don't forget the cereal packet! :p

(Have I just admitted where I hide my money?!! )
    Gone ... or have I?

£6k between you. Over £16k you'll not get anything that's means tested. Between those figures they reduce any benefits by £1/week for every £250 (or part thereof) you have -- so savings of £6751 will see a £4 reduction, as will £6999

Ok now I understand. This does make my original comment about the amount going down daily, very relevant. By the time the form is dealt with, any amount over 6k will obviously have changed! Unless of course we gave up eating for a while and didn't pay the bills :)

Also, you mentioned doing it over the phone - is that a better way than having to hand write it on paper forms? I don't suppose there's an online form instead?

That should count as before 1995. Nonetheless, they will ask for all relevant documentation at a later date, so the Decision Maker will make the final decision.

Yikes - Any idea what documents they ask for? I'd like to be prepared and hunt them down asap. I know they're stuffed in a box somewhere...

Mine/ours was for IS, and the main advantage to doing it over the phone was that the claim started on the date of the phone call -- and they couldn't claim not to have received it ;)

Can you now let us have your full address, please. And the location of your spare key...

In most circumstances its easier to claim over the phone by calling 0800 055 6688. They'll take all your details then arrange an appt for you to see the assessor at the Jobcentre who can access the claim form (customer staement as they call it) and go through it with you. The call centre should also tell you what you'll need to take with you. Bank statements you've printed off aren't accepted for the same reason they won't accept photocopies (you can do wonders with tippex). You'll need to get them from the bank. If you don't have what they need don't delay in submitting your claim as you can provide the additional info within an acceptable period.
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!

They've always accepted computer printed statements from me, as the account is on-line only (the bank don't produce or send out statements)

Well for current accounts we get monthly postal statements, so that's ok.

But the savings accounts only send out yearly statements. There's not much left in them now but obviously we'll have to prove the amounts anyway. The only way to show what the balance and recent transactions are will be via printout from online. Surely that must be acceptable in this day and age of paperless billing etc? Or do we have to make some special request to the banks for paper statements? What if there's a charge for those?
