I bought a car in Northern Ireland and I'm living in England. I need to register it from the garage dealer to my name but he said it has NI tax on it for another few months. He said NI and England don't recognise each other and I would need to tax it in England and then I can register it?
HELP??

You can re-tax the car at any time - and it will be transferred from the Northern Ireland DVLA computer to the Great Britain DVLA database in your name. if they ask do you want to change the registration to a UK one don't - it will cost you to replace the plates!!
You may be able to apply for a partial refund of the remaining months on the Northern Ireland Tax Disc - contact them by phone or email to enquire.John0 -

All sounds a bit of a who-ha.. my wife bought her car in england when we lived there. We moved back to Norn Iron a few years ago now and it's still got an English reg on it, wasn't any problem to re-tax or re-insure.. I think it's it's complete cr*p that he says NI and England don't recognise each other. You don't have to change your National Insurance number if you move to England!! And at the end of the day it all goes to the British Treasury so why wouldn't it be recognised... Ask the DVLA Directly or as IrishJohn says, it'll only cost you to re-reg your car...
All sounds a load of old cobblers!!Live, Love & Laugh A Lot!0 -
Bought in England and brought over here several times, all it takes is one form filled in, and complete twaddle about tax being different, it's the same both sides of the water, includes MOT as well, completely legal both sides of the water. He probably dont want to have to fill the form in lazy !!!!!!0

Hi Colin
I brought my car over here when I moved back from England in 2005 - Once my tax disk expired I had to go to the Tax office in NI and have it transferred from the GB computer in Swansea onto the NI system - it was just a wee bit more complicated than re-taxng the car - and when it was done I was asked did I want to give the car NI plates - but I stuck with the english plates.
Its not complicated but it has to be done - its not that the two countries systems don't recognise each other but there are two separate computer databases - onr for GB in Swansea and one for Northern Ireland somehwere in N IrelandJohn0 -

But soon to be done away with as all UK cars are to be tax registered at the central DVLA computer in Swansea.

You can drive the car freely in GB on NI tax until it expires. If the MOT expires before this, you can get the car MOTd in GB without problems. Then you will need to register the car in GB and get the tax in GB just before the Tax is up. A quick phone call to Swansea DVLA or a browse of their website will tell you what you need to do to transfer this over but it's not a headache at all.
The only problem will be that if you need to register it to yourself from the dealer's name in a hurry, then you will need to get the reg and tax done before the current tax expires but you can claim the rest back from DVLNI.
If possible tho, just hold off doing it until the week before the current tax runs out.0 -
Hey
To register a NI car in Great Britain you will need:
-Form V55/5 - available from a DVLA Local Office, by ringing DVLA (0870 240 0010) and they will post one out, or order online via http://www.dvla.gov.uk/onlineservices/order_forms.aspx?ext=dg
- GB insurance
- GB or NI MOT certificate
- NI V5C Registration Certificate or Export Certificate
- Photocopy of current tax disc or payment for new disc if untaxed.
- ID such as photocard driving licence (see full list at http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/RegisteringAVehicle/DG_4022316)
- If you want to keep the NI plates then put this in writing.
Take/send all this to your local DVLA Office. It takes 2-7 working days to register.
And, as mentioned above, do this in advance of your tax expiring! Otherwise you will need to keep car off road until you have new tax disc back!
Hope that helps!
PM me if you have any queries!

sorry i havent read all the replies but when i moved to england as a student i kept mine taxed and registered in ni, they said since i was a student and spent time at home it was fine.
the tax renewal forms went to my mums address, she sent them to me, i returned them with insurance details and she went to po to tax it and send me my tax disc.
was about 6 years later i finally got round to going to my local dvla office, filled in a form and the car was then regisered on the english system and thus i could apply for tax here etc.
they never paid any attention tot he fact that my mots and insurance were for england, though in my first 2 years insurance i did make sure covered driving in ni as some didnt. (and i didnt actually go home after my first year at uni so didnt worry about that afterwards).
i never had any problems with it being an ni tax disc, rather than english, and even after i switched it to here i kept my number plates.0 -
OK the registration form is not signed by the garage dealer. I presume he don't need to seen as he was not a registered owner?
Do I just have to got to DVLA office and tell them put it in my name, do I need ID?0
