Last night was a victory for me as I drank wine with a friend and didn't have a fag at all! Then another (smoker) friend turned up and I still resisted, even when she was smoking in the same car! yay!

Day 6 - Nearly 1 week not smoking!!

Minute by minute, hour by hour.... :D

By the way I found this website (link below) really interesting!! It gives you good info on timescales after you have quit on beneficial health changes of stopping smoking and statistics about likely withdrawl symptoms you could suffering quitting smoking and how long they usually last...

You will feel better! Last night when my friend walked in to the room I thought 'yuck' she really smells of smoke! Its got to get easier so everything as long as I can keep my willpower (finding it hard with so much going on to be honest!) and from now on, everything is win-win! Smell better. taste better. richer. live longer! YAY!

• I know my smell is definately bit better - my mum sent around some books for me to read and they stunk of fags could smell it on my fingers - was well yucky - and then this guy sitting 3 seats away from me on the train last night was eating a kit kat and I could honestly smell the chocolate - ha ha - going to go and treat myself at lunch time to something nice me thinks as am 20 quid better off (not counting the patch money that I'm spending as got a good deal)
• I quit smoking on 17th November 2005 and have even survived the office xmas bash and new year celebrations without a fag!

My husband and I visited one of the Allen Carr Smoking Clinics in Birmingham, it cost £220 and was the best £220 i have ever spent. If you do not succeed in quitting smoking, and providing you attend some back up sessions if struggling - you get your money back - what have you got to lose? If you quit it will be the best spent £200 ever and if you don't you are no worse off financially.

Good luck everyone.
• I know we are all aware of the fact that smoking was bad for your health in general and cancer specifically however I didn't know it tripled your chance of becoming blind.
Specifically, for 40 or more pack-years:
• There was almost a tripling of risk, compared with non-smokers, for age-related macular degeneration. The odds ratio was 2.75, with a 95% confidence interval from 1.22 to 6.20.
• For choroidal neovascularization, the risk was more than double: the odds ratio was 2.49, with a 95% confidence interval from 1.06 to 5.82.
• For geographic atrophy, the risk was more than triple: the odds ratio was 3.43, with a 95% confidence interval from 1.28 to 9.20.
For lesser levels of smoking, there was a trend toward greater risk, increasing in a dose-response fashion, but the risks did not reach statistical significance, the researchers found.

When the non-smokers -- 158 cases and 110 controls -- were broken down by their exposure to second-hand smoke, the researchers also found a significantly increased risk of age-related macular degeneration.

Compared with non-smokers who weren't exposed to second-hand smoke, the non-smokers who had such exposure had nearly twice the risk of having any form of age-related macular degeneration. The odds ratio was 1.87, with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 1.03 to 3.40.

• Interesting that the "eye" has the greatest concentration of vitamin C in the body and smoking depletes vitamin C https://www.vitamincfoundation.org you need 1 gram a day if you smoke or not.
Are U getting enough Vitamin D in your life!?

I'm not a frequent poster, more of a frequent browser, but I had to join in this thread!

I'm on day 6 of giving up, so have recent experience of the services on offer.

I've tried giving up smoking at least 50+ times, with everyone known method/book/tape etc except Zyban and the chinese one with needles, and never lasted more than 6 weeks. This time I'm doing the patches and microtabs courtesy of my NHS Stop Smoking Clinic - its my second time around with them, and I can't praise them highly enough. For the price of 1 prescription £6.90, I got 210 microtabs - plus I was given free 2 weeks worth of patches, and will get more - the total cost of 10 weeks worth of patches + microtabs will be under £30 - I used to spend that in a week on cigs.

However, the real point of this postingis that you can use whatever product you like - its getting your mind straight that counts. This time, I've hardly had a craving - just noticed a few times that I'm not having a cig. Nor am I pigging out. I'm using the patches etc on the basis that my chances are doubled by using them, but would be quite willing to go cold turkey if needed.

For me, I needed a real physical goal, not some wishy-washy 'I'll be more healthy' or even a pot of money to spend, 'cos lets face it, you always find a way to get the money for a smoke. My goal is to be able to RUN (not walk) the Race for Life in the summer - not really achievable at the moment since I can't run for the bus!

Hope this helps!

• Zyban is used in the US as an anti-depressant as well so it may be a useful choice for depressed people wishing to lose weight as well as stopping smoking but do read the stuff at CRAYMEDS

I was told by my hospital consultant that nicotine can help certain forms of bowel disease such as u/c. that said, he still recommended stopping smoking.

Apparently smoking can help Colitis, but I have Crohns Disease and this is made worse by the smoking. I would think that the other bad effects of smoking would out weigh the benefits if someone had colitis though???

Well done everyone who has stopped. I cant bring myself to do a quit day!!!
