Storing food, like salt, flour, sugar etc

  • I am a recent lock & lock convert and I just love them! I got a 30 piece set as a "one time only" the other week for £15 on QVC and have been amazed by how much use I've got out of them. I was a bit sceptical because the sets of lock & lock on QVC always seem to have lots of small boxes in, but they are brilliant for storing things like hundreds and thousands, flaked almonds etc. and the large ones are great for flour and sugar. I get two bags of flour in one of the large ones. I also have 3 of the cereal lock and lock containers which I use for porridge oats and muesli.

I have just ordered another set from QVC - they have some bargains at the moment because I think that lock and lock have just made some small design changes and so the older stock is getting sold off.

  • Just a quickie (slightly off topic) re weevils etc. We stored some bird food in our kitchen cupboard and had an infestation of some little moths. It was a complete nightmare and took about 6 weeks to be completely free of them!
The larve ate through the packets of dried stuff I had stored in the cupboard and a full bleaching of the cabinet (including down the edges) still didn't kill them all
Fully recommend storing ALL dried packets etc in boxes, jars, tubs etc!
Although, now keep bird food in the shed.....
  • jcr - that cupboard looks so tidy!

OK, probably stupid question, but can I ask - what do you do when a box is nearly empty and you need to top up?
I presume you have to empty out - fill up and put the last of the 'old' back on top.
  • I'm going to sound sad here, but can someone measure (in mm) a full bag of flour for me please?
Mine is half empty and I'm not stocking up till I've found the boxes to keep them in :-) I usually buy 1.5kg bags..

I bought some L&L in John lLwis last week (so satisfying, click, click, click, click) but you can get "Good & Lock" -or summat similar- at B&M bargains, 3 pieces for 1.99. Depends on how co-ordinated you want your cupboard I guess. Funnily enough I have just been to Ikea and bought the very jar recommend in an earlier post for my lumpy salt!

My kitchen is freezing (no insulation in the roof at the mo) so I have a bit of an issue with the salt container absorbing moisture from the damp cold air. Soon to be sorted though!;)

Bumping this post to ask another Lock & Lock question. I'm slowly trying to organise my storecupboard, and increase my L&L collection - which size would be right for the big 3kg bags of pasta? I imagine if I used one the cereal dispensers it might be tricky getting the contents out?
