Hello, I am looking at some storage jars to tip my 1.5kg bags of flour in to, as my cupboards sometimes get a bit damp... It's confusing me though because they come in litres...
The ones I am looking at come in 3.8l or 2.4l, but they are pretty le creuset ones that i would keep out on worktop. I'm not set on these though, looking at other options too?
So, (sounds like a strange question, but...) does anyone know how much 1.5kg of flour is in litres?0 -
1.5 kilogram = 3.571428571429 liter0

Lock n Lock boxes get my vote every time - they're not pretty but do keep things fresh and dry.
QVC and Lakeland sell them online.....

You can use a jug with litre measurements and some scales to determine the approximate mass of flour per litre, and then use this to calculate the size containers needed.0

Whenever I buy flour, I first put it in the fridge for a day or so. The cold prevents any little creatures hatching or developing. You can also freeze flour to get the same result. I assume you could do this with any dried food.

Gawd.... what's this all about? Are there things living in my flour that I can't see? I thought it was sieved and cleaned in the milling process??????
This has put me right off my slice of toast:rotfl: .
PLEASE tell me I've nothing to worry about........

You really don't need to worry. Very, very, VERY occasionally you'll get flour weevils in flour, but to put it into perspective I've only ever once had them, and that was in a *very* out of date bag of plain flour that I bought from a local shop many years ago - I threw the bag away and scrubbed out the container and I've never had a problem since. I've worked in catering for years, and been a baker for over eight years and I've never come across flour weevils in all that time, and I've seen a LOT of flour
(In fact in all that time the only odd thing I've come across were two boxes of Greek currants that had something squiggly in them, and that turned out to be a processing fault and the whole batch was recalled - not something that you'll find domestically, I promise).
Freezing flour can help kill off anything that might be in there, but really, you're unlikely to find anything if you buy decent, in date flour, and you store it properly and use it within a sensible time frame. The issue comes when you've got odd bits of flour in jars that you've had for years and years, or if you don't store opened bags of flour properly (and again, you're more likely to have problems with ants and mice if you do that, rather than anything 'living' in the flour). Just practice good 'stock rotation' in your cupboards and you're really unlikley to ever have a problem.0 -
Thanks all. Going to get some bigger plastic containers next week for the things in the cupboard, also to free up my freezer space :rotfl:
I've never seen flour weevils, just pscoids (love that word) a couple of times so I always check now to see if there are any tiny bugs movingFluttering about an inch off the ground, I may fly properly one day and soar in the clouds!

I found something teeny, weeny, black and obviously alive in my flour a few years ago. I carried on and used it to cook the pastry or cakes or whatever it was I intended to cook at the time. I'm not a vegetarian (although I used to be) so eating teeny, weeny creatures in my pastry really doesn't bother me.

the easiest way is to measure the packet in cm -height, width and depth, just times them together to get the volume (in cm) and divide the number by 1000 to get in litres,
according to lill you need the 3.8L ones0
