Yep vitamin C tablets can help. If you have any :)

My breadnaker does the same with whole wheat. I usually make those loaves with 1/3 whole wheat and the rest just strong white these days.

You could also, to give it more time... set the machine to "make dough". When it's done, set your kitchen timer for an hour... and then start the machine from scratch into your "Make wholemeal" or "longest making" program.

thanks squeaky , have to go into town this afternoon will pick up vitamin c then and give it a go.

hadn't thought about mixing the flours - all these different things to try, i keep on having to remind myself that it should only be baked when we need it otherwise we would be overun with different types of bread.

I just want to play with my new toy all the time

Thanks squeaky. That'll keep me occupied for a while. :D

Off to see which breadmaker's recommended as other half's going to buy one. Even though I've said I've no room for one, I'm sure they can't take up much more space than a loaf actually does. I hope :)

    hi little lil
I think that home made wholemeal bread is very heavy compared with commercial stuff which has air pumped through it.
If it's too heavy, try using some white, perhaps 1/3 or 1/2. My lot wouldn't eat the all wholemeal stuff.

I think it's all down to the timings of the dough making part, as Squeaky suggested above, as I found that wholemeal and granary bread came out very heavy and dense in my old machine which took around 3 hours but in the Panasonic it takes 5 hours and the bread is lovely and light, just like you'd buy from the bakers :)

This has been my experience too - although in my old machine the bread wasn't heavy and dense, just OK. I use half wholemeal flour, half granary and no vitamin C.
