wireless internet - health problems??

Hey all

I'm trying to convince my parents to have wireless broadband installed, rather than the standard ADSL Broadband we have currently. Both me and my parents live full time in the house and both have laptops, and my brother lives here during uni holidays and he has a Mac computer. So at times it can be really awkward to get online when all 3 parties want to use it!!

Wireless would solve this issue but my parents seem to think that wireless can be damaging to your health - they think its a bit like mobile phones can fry your brain theory (though they both have mobiles!).

Does anyone know of any evidence/websites to help persuade them that wireless is safe?

Or, is there any way that you can use 2/3 ADSL modems on one phoneline at same time?

Thanks in advance

    I'll be interested in this.

I don't know thw answer, and even if you find a site that says wireless systems are safe, your parents may not be convinced. After all, how many other things have been thought to be 'safe' only later to have health warnings attached?

Having said that, I have a wireless network, but I switch it off when I'm not using it, and especially when I go to bed. It only takes a few seconds to boot up.

Could you compromise and maybe use the router with a cable when there is only one person using it, and just have the wireless on when more than one want to use it?

You don't need to have anything installed, you simply need to buy a router e.g. here and use it with your current ISP, it replaces your modem.

Yes it would simply solve your sharing problem and it's a bit silly of them to worry about "damage to your health" if they both use mobiles. Mobiles use much higher power levels, necessary to communicate with the nearest base station, obviously much further away than your router would be!

Wireless is all around you, even if you don't have a wireless router, you immediate neighbours probably will have one.

You can't connect more than one ADSL modem to the line at once, however an ADSL router will easily share your connection either using wireless or by connecting an Ethernet cable from each PC/notebook to the router as the wireless can be switched off.

  • I have not seen any evidence of health dangers from wifi signals. They arent the same strength as mobile phones or mobile phone masts so the radiation is not strong enough to do any harm in adults. Their has been debate in the effects on very young children but nothing proven. The thing to remember with wifi is that it is a very weak and fairly local signal. Your home microwave most likely puts out more dangerous radiation but still you would need to be right next to it all the time. Also dont forget if their was health dangers anyone living near an airport would be getting saturated by similar radiation. The thing to keep in mind is that he signal is weak and plenty of things drown it out. For example using a baby monitor in a house will cause a lot of problems for wifi signals as can some DECT cordless phones.
  • Does that mean it's safe to take off my TFH now?
