I just bought one too, but without the voucher - still a good deal. I used to think I hated slow cookers, though I use a pressure cooker a lot. Then I picked up a little mini slow-cooker at a local charity shop that does electricals, thinking that if nothing else it would be useful to keep my husband's portion warm when we eat earlier. Made a couple of things and loved it - I was amazed to find out how much less trouble it is to be able to leave the pot all day, rather than just keeping an eye on it for 30mins/1hr with the pressure cooker. Even though the 'getting ready to cook' is the same, and I still brown etc in another pan first, so there is slightly more washing up. So I was thinking I would maybe like a bigger one too - and saw this on Argos with excellent reviews.
I would say it runs just a touch hotter than I would like - it bubbles a bit more than my smaller one - but nothing to be a problem, and actually that may be an advantage in getting sauces etc to thicken. I've left it all day with no sign of drying out.
I also hit on a WONDERFUL book of advice and recipes in Smiths yesterday - a thick glossy illustrated hardback on special offer for £1.99!! Yes, that's not a misprint. Excellent quality, comparable with a Dorling Kindersley type of book. It actually has a lot of useful basic cookery stuff in as well, and advice on how to cook the things that are less than suitable for a slow-cooker - I'm thinking of getting a second copy for my daughter to take to college.
Buy both and enjoy, would be my advice.0 -
HalfaSixpence, that book sounds good - could you tell me the title of it please? And possibly the author/publisher - whatever I need to find it online really!
Thanks0 -
well done on your buy
its not totally related but i had to ask here that would you ever buy something that was price about £5-10? Went window shopping today and looking at the kitchen gadgets (i always look but dont touch) anyway in wilkinson saw some gadgets we dont have which i would love to get that arent that expensive. A sandwich toastie maker £5 and a 3 tier steamer which i think i remember being £10. anyway does anyone trust things that are priced so low? im scared im gonna bring it home plug it in and it will blow up or just break within daysbut the price is very tempting.

I bought 2 Sainsburys basic kettles for about £5 each. One for home and one for camping about 3 years ago. And they are still going strong.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

The full title of the book I got for £1.99 in Smiths is 'Slow Cooker, One Pot Cooking and Casseroles' by Catherine Atkinson and Jenni Fleetwood, pub Lorenz Books. It seems to be a conjunction of two previous titles - 'One Pot and Clay-pot cookery' and 'The Slow Cooker Cookbook'. Pub price 14.99. On Amazon.co.uk at 10.99:
On WH Smith online but at full price, so really you want to get to a store.
Sorry: I can't post the link as the system classifies me as a new user.0 -
And just to add that I did a pot-roasted beef brisket today with butternut squash carrots and onions and it was yummy.0
