Processors for Laptop - Advice Appreciated

Hi

Can anyone tell me if there is a comparison of processors?

I need to compare a Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.00GHz, 800Mhz FSB, 2MB cache) (available on current laptops)

with

a Intel Core Duo T7100@ 1.80 GHz (which I bought in 2007).

Really not sure how it works with the T number and the GHz speed.

many thanks.

  • The T numbers are just model numbers.

They run on the same bus speeds, have the same cache, and are very similar speeds. Between the two, I'd say there is very little difference. It'll be more between how they're utilised in their respective laptops.

That's useful thanks. Presumably the higher the GHz, the better in theory?

Only when comparing processors of the same line and architecture. Core 2 duo is a more advanced and efficient version of the core duo. But as said above, there will be little difference in speed, but the core 2 duo is newer, probably has a smaller die, and therefore battery may last a little longer.

Edit - ok, die size is probably the same, but cache is slightly larger.
  • The T numbers are Tuned, P is Power saving and X is for the eXtreme.

the core 2 has had a refresh so will be faster, the core2 shrink from 65 to 45nm gained about 10% in some benchmarks, it could be something like 25% clock for clock in some areas.

on a more important note, most apps are disk bound and often you woulnt see over 10% cpu usage so a fast cpu is often not worth it.

what do you want to do

I'm checking out a Dell laptop - XPS 1530 with 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD and the 2.0 GHz processor. Oh and a 256mb graphics card.

    £649. Any good?

It's a laptop. Unless you're doing 3D gaming with it, the only things that matter are the hard drive size, the amount of RAM in it and how long the battery lasts.

A faster processor won't make you type faster, read documents faster, play music any better or make the internet any quicker.

Heres a cool 'benchmark' webpage to compare processors

There's a big difference in performance between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. In some situations as much as 40%. And they run cooler, too.

Indeed. Because I have to say that in the time I've had a laptop with both, I've noticed absolutely no difference whatsoever in daily use. As the fan hardly ever comes on on the Core Duo one, I doubt heat is an issue.
