afternoon all,
I'm sure this has been answered many times before, but for a complete no-tech person who wants to get dragged into the 20th century, please could anyone help...
- want to get connected to the internet at home.
- bt landline currently being installed by landlord.
- not big downloaders, simply web surfing/checking email.
- have own mac laptop.
- will be moving out of the property in 5 months (can I take the line/broadband to the next digs?
- don't need phone (but if not expensive would look at it).
- don't need sky (but would prefer to the phone, if not expensive!).
- mobile broadband reception is rubbish (eg non-existent) in the field where I live.
How do I work out the cheapest package and the one that gives best coverage and can be moved to the next house.
Thanks in advance.

If you are only surfing & checking mail how about dial up pay as you go?
Not speed of broadband of course, but for light user may well be cheaper, especially if you use in "off peak" evenings, also saves problem with long term contract tie insWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -

To answer some of your questions we would need to know your exchange and whether it has been unbundled.
Can you go to samknows (link below) and type in your post code and let us know your exchange name or alternatively tell us who if anyone is in the column on the bottom right: "LLU operator presence"
Sam KnowsWaddle you do eh?0 -
kitz.co.uk

Ah,
not sure how good this is looking.
The exchange is Dapple Heath, Staffordshire. Not tel number at the moment, it's 'in the process' of being installed, but couple be a week away.
On the Kitz site, all the providers are listed as Not available. Is this right?
Thanks again.

Yes it just means your exchange hasn't been unbundled (LLU) yet, so an example, O2 Broadband if they had have unbundled your exchange you could have got the standard 8Mb package for only £7.50pm.
You would still be able to get o2 Broadband but it would be their more expensive O2 Home Broadband Access package (it uses BTs equipment rather than their own).
Just as an example, with O2 Broadband you sign up for a year and if you do move in that period as long as you move to an area where o2 broadband cover then there would be no fee for doing so. Otherwise, you would have to pay a cancellation fee.
Obviously, on your line you would also be able to get BT Broadband as well.Waddle you do eh?0
