Tesco Mobile payg

Hi all,

My mother got a cell phone to bring her up to date with the 21st Century, and so I researched sim cards for her. Tesco had the following offer:

top up with £10, get £10 free
top up with £15, get £30 free
top up with £20, get £40 free

Anyway, so I filled in the form online (she doesn't use a computer and my dad only uses one sporadically) to get the sim sent directly to her, and ordered her to top up with £20 when she received it.

My dad took her to tescos when it arrived, and she duly topped up with £20, and the credit stayed at £20. So my dad showed the customer service people the flyer they received with the sim, and they said they knew nothing about it and didn't know how to do it, and maybe the extra credit would come through automatically. It's been 3 days now, and the credit is still showing as £20, so no extra has come through.

Does anyone know how to activate this offer? I would never have ordered a tesco sim for her if it wasn't for this 'too good to be true' offer. Surely if it is in black and white (or whatever colour the advertising that came with it) it should have been a simple thing for the customer service people to check and activate?

Thanks for reading

Ok, I have found the T&C's relating to the free credit shown below. However, as I live no where near my parents, I haven't seen the welcome pack. Could anyone tell me what steps are necessary to activate the free credit? Thanks

Thanks for that - we posted around the same time:D

However, they have already put the £20 in. I'm really cross that the CS people didn't tell my parents that they had to dial 242 before topping up. They just said they knew nothing about it.

    Is there any recourse?
  • If you click on the link I posted. It says something about how to activate the fee credit.

It does take 48hrs so I think they need to ring 282 now that it hasnt been credited.
  • I'm not sure why or how the CS would know or be expected to know about something that you ordered online?

It was an offer from Tesco (www.tescomobile-freesim.co.uk) directly. They should surely know how the system works to activate the free credit? For a company that gets £1 out of every £8 spent, surely when they advertise something on a big scale, they tell their staff about it?

Anyway, I've phoned customer services, and they say that the free credit has been applied anyway, but it doesn't show up on the phone, you have to text 'balance' to 2112 to see your free credit amount.

For the benefit of other people who may be tempted to choose this sim, it seems it is quite a good deal, but nowhere as good as I was hoping. It's probably best for high users.

The free credit is only valid for 1 month. For a low user like my mother, I was hoping that the £20 initial outlay would last her about 6 monhts (£40 free credit), but if you don't use it you lose it.

The free credit can be used for texts, landlines and cell phones, but not for 08 numbers.

I've edited my title as they didn't 'lie' and I suppose I apologise to tesco mumble mumble

    Hi tincat

We have used Tescomobile for a few years and find it good value as we only contact a small number of people. Be sure to get the 5 favourites registered (you can do it online) as the free credit is charged at the same rate as the calls and texts - so half price to favourites.

As for using the free credit. If your parents don't have free daytime calls on their landline, suggest they use the mobile for any calls that they have to make in the next month.

If you applied through that link did you not read the T&C at the time of application ,nor see the footnote which says:

"Free credit is given once each month, takes 48 hours to activate and is valid for one month. Free credit and calls and texts to your 5 favourite numbers are to any UK mobile and landline numbers starting 01, 02 or 03. Free credit can also be used for picture messaging and mobile internet browsing."
